False Positives

What is a false positive? It is a test result that is returned when a substance tests positive for another compound. It is a case of mistaken identity. For example if you eat a couple poppy seed cakes before testing, you can get a positive result for opiates.

The chances of you getting a false positive depends on the quality of the laboratory that does the testing. There seems to be about 1,200 of these labs in the United States currently testing for drugs. Less than a 100 of these meet federal standards and most of the individual states do not regulate drug test labs. The number of false positives returned range from 4% to over 50%, depending on the lab.

A concern here is that, if your company tests for drug useage, they are probably not required to use a certified drug testing lab, which means you have a greater chance of getting a false positive.

Fabulous, it's one of the reasons I oppose drug testing in the workplace and welfare recipients.

As a ex-chemist, I can't stand the cheap immunoassays that also miss many drugs ( false negatives) and the numerous false positives. The standard urine drug screen in emergency rooms miss methadone, xanax and fentanyl...just to name a few. The gas chromatography is much more accurate but now the price goes from 20 dollars to over 300 -500dollars. Going back to the welfare testing, number 1, studies show they are no more likely to abuse drugs than the general population ( my family was on welfare when my DAD was a P.O.W in Vietnam), #2, by the time we train point of care technicians to handle specimens (which is intensive, as a Lab director, I know) and due process for positive tests ( confirmatory with gas or mass spectrometry), we have just spent more money than just allowing the 2% that abuse drugs to continue abusing drugs. ( For the record, my brother was a speech writer in Washington and he can tell you more Senators abuse drugs than welfare recipients, so if we test any government workers, let's test the ones that suck up our tax monies for their eternally expensive retirement and health care plans).

Good points and although I do agree with you about politicians their abuse,I have to disagree with you about not testing welfare recipients.I feel if we are going to test than politicians should be included in this as well and should actually be the first to be tested.

Drugs are not the only thing politicians abuse though so that is only a beginning to what needs to be looked at about politicians.

I agree, if we are going to go through the expense of testing entitlement recipients, then we need to test all them, including congressional representatives who command a huge retirement portfolio and cadillac health insurance benefits that use up more of our tax monies than welfare recipients.
Regarding the latter, remember, lots of ex-veterans are welfare recipients. Many , post combat veterans, are drug users of some sort or another. I can't begrudge them for what the hell they have been put through, we would be needlessly punishing their family and children.....and once again, they are no more likely to use illicit drugs than the general population. A false positive in a exveteran , he has no legal recourse. A senator, can at least hire a lawyer....

Darlin,I am an ex Marine and have fought for our rights so believe me when I say I have the utmost respect and admiration for all who have served and do and to all who have lost due to serving.The whole point of this war on drugs though,is IT DOES NOT WORK! One of the reasons is that we (the gov't) picks and chooses who gets tested and who get ignored.Who we go after and who we get paid off from! The point is if we really do want to end drug abuse than we have to go in balls deep and have no reservations about who we bring down.PERIOD. All the way from the white house down to your everyday citizens.With that being said,I am also talking about cigarettes and alcohol since they are the biggest drug related killers in the world.Like I said,if we are going to do this than lets do it right and start with the worst and work our way down!

Now since we know that will never happen due to how much money is made from it on both sides,we need to stop wasting time,money and man power on such bullshit things and start re-thinking what needs to be made legal and kept illegal.The prohibition didnt work and neither will this ridiculous war on drugs.

Before the Michigan policy was halted, only 10% of recipients tested positive for illicit drugs. Only 3% tested positive for hard drugs, such as cocaine and amphetamines – rates that are in line with the drug use rates of the general population.
Seventy percent of all illicit drug users (and presumably a much higher percentage of alcohol users), ages 18-49, are employed full-time.

Regarding the latter, I don't drug test my employees, if they can do their work, fine, if they can't, I fire them. If I have a pot head that can do her job very well, who cares. Plain and simple.

I'm a dual citizen of China and USA ( long story). Once the government can violate what is the 4th amendment with "illegal searches" using drug testing, it opens the door for other searches. I know, because this is what they do back home. We chinese understand that drug abuse will always be rampant in a free market system. Mao , successfully eradicated my home country's addiction to Opium (3/4 of us were addicted) with ruthless drug testing, home searches and totalitarian efficiency. Now that free market capitalism is making it's way throughout after Deng's "Reaganization" of our economy, drug addiction is making a comeback. It is the price of a relatively free market economy.

My hats off to you, my husband is ex 82nd Airborne from the first Iraqi war. Both my mom and dad were in Air AMerica during vietnam war ( my mom was Taiwanese but spoke vietnamese fluently and was an operative...yes Taiwan was on our side even though China technically supported the VCs). I agree, let's make drugs legal. If we legalize pot, we dessimate 80% of the mexican drug cartel. I have never had a pothead pull out IVs and throw nurses around the ICU because they were gong through DTs. I never treat wounds to a wife inflicted by a person smoking pot, the angry alcoholic gives all the trauma surgeons here good practice. Cocaine and meth are so individually destructive, they take out the individual quickly and remove them from pool for procreation. I think we can pay down the nationall debt if taxed and legalized drugs. Even the CDC has come out and stated alcohol is more destructive on society than any other drug...

I disagree about the amount of welfare recipients on drugs due to as you have yourself stated,in-sufficient testing proceedures among other reasons.I state this only due to dealing with many people who are on welfare and believe me,the large majority of them are on some form of drugs.

As for what you are stating about Mao eradicaating drug addiction there,you have just re-itterated what I have stated,it can be done but we have to go at it 100%.Whether you feel its right or not how it got done in China,it DID get done and thats the point.The only way to stop it is going complete N A Z I gov't and taking away everyone's freedom's.Of course this is not what I believe should happen but thats irrelevant.If we are truly about eliminating all drug use/abuse than this would be the only way.Once again,I mean starting with tobacco and alcohol and working our way down.Just because the gov't decided that tobacco and alcohol make them too much money and should be legal does not change the proven facts that they are our TOP KILLERS! God bless your father for what he has gone through and the utmost respect goes out to him.But this is my point,its not about not testing welfare recipients,its about testing anyone.If we were to go all out,yes many people would be hurt,inconvenienced and freedoms taken away but that would be the only way to make it happen.Since we all can agree that that would never happen especially when it came time to investigate the so called "powers that be" then it should be needless to say that legalizing,taxing and better monitoring of who uses would be the best way to solve the drug problems of the world.Most importantly educating everyone on them and stop trying to HIDE everyone from them.

Oh yea,one last thing as for your family being on welfare which helped you go to college.Your case would seem warranted for help and was in fact a good thing.Which actually is an entirely different problem with our gov't----TAKING BETTER CARE OF OUR VETERANS.If they had more funds available to veterans than "welfare" per say would not be needed.Veterans,especially war time Veterans should not need a hand out.They EARNED their money and the right to have money for them and their families once back home.

That being a different topic for another thread though,back to your case.I can say that IMO your's is the minority of cases.Most welfare families are not there because they have only this as an option to survive but because they CHOOSE to have this option.Families that claim to "need" welfare to survive continue to have more and more kids,meaning more and more mouths to feed on OUR dime! If you dont have money to feed what kids you have why on earth would you have more? Also have you ever wondered why so many welfare recipients are driving new vehicles? Or wearing tons of gold?? Or have the best cell phones?? Ot have the best and latest electronics for their homes?

If they were truly needy,they would not have such things.Many of these families are collecting in different names and taking advantage of a system that has failed.

With a job they risk being drug tested.With welfare they do not.Whats easier,sitting on their asses getting high all day or having to bust their asses working like us?

Im sorry,but you may have been on welfare because your family truly needed it and made good from its use but the vast majority of welfare recipients do not.If my tax dollars have to support these people than we need better control of how and what they use it for.

If that is what it says? Now it does say that the perecbntage of these false positives are quite low, however, for some this can happen. Always good to tell the lab whatever you take beforehand
