i used to believe that it was the only way. man i was way way wrong. i would say that if you are really bad out of shape then it would be a really good jump start or if you have a stubborn metabolism. i am now leaning more toward interval type training and eccentric less work. gives you the ability to hold onto much more muscle without hammering your recoverability.
I like it. I've done it quite a bit over the years and it does work great, but like guns said, definitely not the only way. For me, it's honestly just easiest. Get up and knock out my cardio first thing in the morning.
did fasted cardio all through last year's prep for mexico, worked phenomenally

i do it sometimes. but if i do it in the morn I fall out half way through due to hunger
i dont anymore. no need to you can get lean far more easily and painlessly
I'm currently doing it now. Getting pretty leaned up I might add
