Keto Diet and Bodybuilding
Hi all,
Just started the Keto diet a week ago. Question. Have any of you trained on the Keto? This is definitely the lowest carb I've ever gone and I still can't get over that fear of losing muscle with the carb and protein restriction. Could you all share you're experiences if you've done this diet while training HARD? Did you add in carbs or a cheat meal at any time during the week or take in carbs after training? Thanks!
Re: Keto Diet and Bodybuilding
The Keto plan is something I been reading up on and still not a fan.
Re: Keto Diet and Bodybuilding
in my younger years i gave it a go like a momo and kept passing out. probably the worse i have felt in my entire life. i dropped weight fast as hell though but i was pretty much worthless
Re: Keto Diet and Bodybuilding
Not a fan of how much bad fat is included.
Re: Keto Diet and Bodybuilding
I loved it! Dropped weight and strength still progressed. After day three or four and it was smooth sailing. Your body processes fat just fine. Dont forget your fiber, that part sucks.
Re: Keto Diet and Bodybuilding
I see a lot of people on Keto eating high saturated fats.

And they assimilate it just fine.

I did it in my early years of training. Weight came off really quick...but my strength never progressed. This is my experience. Everyone is different and will respond differently. Try it and see how you respond!
Re: Keto Diet and Bodybuilding
You need to keep fats high, or you will crash.

Re: Keto Diet and Bodybuilding
I certainly do not train like you all do, but I eat more on the higher protein, fat and low carb end. Unsaturated fats are the bulk of my fat intake and I def have more energy, strength, and feel better over all.
Re: Keto Diet and Bodybuilding
it is great. you will loose size as your muscles will loose their glycogen stores. if done right you will actually feel better as there will be no insulin spikes after eating to make you lethargic.
too many folk do not get enough fat and end up in gluconeogenesis, this will cause your body to turn protein into glycogen so you still run on carbs. it is why many folk fail or say keto did not work for them. they never get into true ketosis.
i did it and dropped fat like crazy, felt GREAT! I was doing mostly cardio but after the initial loss of glycogen and water I managed to put on a pound or two.
Re: Keto Diet and Bodybuilding
So far I am keeping carbs in post workout only also because I have a desk job and see no reason for extra carbs other then post workout. I am also keeping protein high close to 2g per pound. also keeping a 50/50 protein/fat ratio for now. Still only healthy fats.
Re: Keto Diet and Bodybuilding
Thanks for all the replies. Three weeks in and down five pounds. I've always dieted high protein and low fat and carb. This diet makes me feel fuller with all the fat. Blood ketones tested at 1.8 mmol which is good. Abs are starting to come out, muscle fullness is a little down but not drastic. Loving this diet so far. Bacon! Need I say more...
Re: Keto Diet and Bodybuilding
It's good for starting over fresh I think, that's how I used it. In high school and the first few years following I trained without caring about proportions. I still wanted to look good and I was lean but for instance I had a 17" arm (cold) with a 43-44" chest. So my body was all out of wack when I decided to re-dedicate to bodybuilding over just training for strength and generalized aesthetics. I cut a ton of weight in only 8 weeks, now that included all my muscle mass too but when you cut that weight in such a short period of time it comes back fast as hell. I dropped 35# but put back on 30# of it within 12 weeks and I had fixed my symmetry issues in the mean time.
Re: Keto Diet and Bodybuilding
I had a symptom when I was eating like this...My teeth became gritty feeling..like overnight. Once I stopped doing keto it went away
