I have a competition coming up and would like to really work on my dead lift. Besides deadlifting, what would be some good exercises to help me improve on my deadlift?

I'd say squats, barbell rows and Farmer's walks. Those are the exercises I'd probably hit pretty hard other than deadlifts to improve my deadlift. Not using any straps when doing heavy Farmer's walks will help your grip strength tremendously holding on to that weight for a longer period. It's probably different for everyone, but I've come across so many times when my grip strength seem to give out before anything else when deadlifting.

my biddy was a champ several years in a row. he built a short platform from flat 2x4s with a piece of plywood on top. it was only 2" thick but he stood on it and deadlifted. when he lifted without the platform he said he could move more weight. not sure it it works but he swore by it

i should have stated the platform is only big enough for him to stand on. the weights are on the ground as if that was not self explanatory...
