I have to put a wood picket fence around my pool and I think I am just going to do it myself and save the installation money. I am pretty proficient in doing this kind of stuff myself.

I just have a few questions.

      1) Getting the fence even with the corner of my house---Is it as simple as figuring the width of the picket and the 1x and set my post back that far?

      2) Is it better to mount the 1x to the outside of the post, or on the inside with some kind of bracket? Does that make sense?

      3) Other than using a string and eye ball, is there another way to make sure you have a straight line going when you have nothing to really measure off of?

      4) Also, I have heard some people say to put the pickets right next to each other and other people say you want a little space because they are going to bow over time.

I'm sure I will have more questions but these are the main ones at the moment.

STRING AND LINE LEVEL IS ALL IVE EVER USED. I ONLY GO 8'-0" ON POST SPACING ON PRIVACY FENCING, NO FARTHER - YOU DONT WANT THE 2x4's BETWEEN POSTS WARPING. ALSO I BUTT THE DOG EARED FENCE BOARDS TOGETHER. SOME FOLKS SAY PUT THE A NAIL SPACE APART, BUT WHEN THEY DRY OUT ITS PRETTY BIG. I BUTT THEM TOGETHER ALWAYS...

PICKET FENCING IS BASICALLY THE SAME, YOU MAY WANT TO ADJUST POST SPACING FOR AESTHETICS AND THEN DO WHATEVER SPACING LOOKS BEST FOR THE PICKETS...I WOULD PUT THE FRAMING ON THE OUTSIDE SO YOU GET TO SEE THE NICE SIDE FROM YOUR POOL

YOU CAN FIGURE OUT ALOT WITH PICS OFF THE WEB...IT LOOKS LIKE THE POSTS ARE CLOSER TOGETHER ON A PICKET FENCE THAN A PRIVACY FENCE. 8'-0" ON CENTER FOR PRIVACY AND 4'-0" ON CENTER FOR PICKET FENCES. CHECK OUT SOME PICS ON THE WEB AND LET ME SEE WHAT KIND YOU HAVE IN MIND

I said picket but I meant privacy (can't edit it). The dog ear is what I'll be doing. When doing the holes for the posts, is it pretty much 2-3ft deep for a 6ft fence? Do you leave a 2" space at the bottom? How high do you normally put the fence above the posts? What type wood do you use? I know cedar is probably the best but I just don't want to spend that much. Have you had good success with just the treated lumber? Pine, I guess it is?

Sorry for all of the questions. I just want to make sure I have my ducks in a row. I would like to have the nice side where I can see...I wonder if that matters to the neighbors?

30" IS DEEP ENOUGH FOR A 6 FOOT HIGH FENCE

GET 2"x4"x8' PRESSURE TREATED BOARDS FOR THE HORIZONAL FRAMING THE DOG EARED BOARDS WILL BE NAILED TO. PUT THEM ABOUT A FOOT OFF THE GROUND, ONE AT THE TOP OF THE POST AND ONE IN BETWEEN. THAT PART DOESNT HAVE TO BE ROCKET SCIENCE!

IF YOU HAVE PETS, YOU MAY WANT TO PUT FENCE BOARDS TO THE GROUND OR JUST ABOVE IT TO KEEP THEM IN

IF YOU WATCH LOWES OR HOME DEPOT, THEY USUALLY HAVE THE DOG EARED FENCE BOARDS ON SALE EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. USUALLY THEY ARE $2 EACH, BUT YOU CAN GET THEM ABOUT $1.19 ON SALE

Okay, so it sounds like I will have to buy 10 footers to cover the 6ft fence, 30" deep, and around 2" off the ground. Yeah, the horizontal boards are pretty self explanatory. But on those, with the being 8ft, do you worry about having the joints on every horizontal board being on the same post every time? We have dogs, so I will bring the boards down to a couple inches from the ground.

I am going by Lowes today to buy some stakes and string to try and line up my corner posts. There is one post that I need to set pretty quick because we are going to have some dirt work done and I want that post to be on solid ground...so I'll have to have it in place before the dirt work. That's my main concern. The rest will just get done as it gets done. I'll check on prices of stuff while I am there. I also want to see how wide the dog eared boards are so I can estimate how much material I am going to need.

This will be a good excuse to buy me a nail gun too

      That's 104". 8ft would leave me at 96". What am I missing?

ALSO INSTEAD OF SPLITTING THE 4x4 AND TOE NAILING INTO THE VERTICAL POSTS, I ALWAYS STAGGER THE HORIZONTAL BOARDS TO GET A GOOD SOLID CONNECTION TO BE ABLE TO NAIL SQUARE TO.

Okay, I see what you are saying. I was messing up by thinking the post was going to be as tall as the dog eared boards. The staggered horizontals make sense too. I thought about using screws instead of nails....any thoughts? Also, what are your tips on going up a slope?

Thanks a TON for the help man!! I really appreciate it!!

IF YOU ARE GOING UP A SLOPE...DO THE FIRST BOARD WHERE YOU WANT IT AND THEN SET ONE A COUPLE OF POSTS DOWN AND PUT THE STRING ON THE TOPS OF BOTH AND START FILLING IN.

USING SCREWS WOULD BE FINE TOO...JUST HAVE A FEW CHARGED BATTERIES IF YOU ARE USING CORDLESS DRILLS. IT WILL KILL THE BATTERIES PRETTY QUICK.

GOOD LUCK MAN! GLAD TO HELP!
