TweetUSPS is a failed business model that never adapted to changes in commerce. Yet another example of gov't incompetence.
Let's take a general look...
USPS is primarily focused on letter delivery.
USPS is generally overpriced with package delivery.
15+ years ago, email became popular for communication. Mailing letter became obsolete.
15+ years ago, website with catalogs, sales, and shopping became popular. Mailing flyers, and catalogs became obsolete (and outdated since websites can be updated instantly whereas a new catalog must be printed and remailed when changes occur)
15+ years ago email became the preferred way to market or solicit to potential customers (spam). Mass mailing to create business became obsolete.
15+ years ago, online shopping was gaining popularity creating more packages being delivered. UPS persued this opportunity and prospered.
The postal service had plenty of opportunity, over a long period of time to realize that things were changing. Ecommerce and Internet services changed the game. In reality, tons of things a delivered each day, but the upswing is for parcels not letters. USPS has a small marketshare of parcels, while their core business of letters will continue to shrink and the will continue to lose revenues. Most business seek to reducing mailings since most junk mail ends up in the trash, printing and postage is expensive, and recently deemed not environmentally friendly. Tons of paper ends up in the landfills. Companies encourage things like paperless billing and automatic payments to eliminate paper bills.
Retards. It's hard to believe they didn't see this coming. Their best effort to combat this was their "flat rate boxes". Great concept, but far too little and far too late.
It's a shame to see it happen, but many of the post offices in my area are closed or schedule to close soon.
