TweetWhat are your opinions on inground pools? Are they worth the money?

Tweetthey are great to have but, as Baby says, takes alot to maintain. As far as increasing the value of your home, its hard to say. If your trying to sell at some point and you have a pool your audience becomes reduced as many folks do not want one. As such and in order to make up for the reduced audience, the home price can fall. on the other hand and you plan on stating in this home forever, than the above is no issue.
TweetWell, I have been asking around and checking with different pool companies and the maintenance isn't what it used to be. With the salt water systems now, maintenance has dropped considerably because you are not always playing with the chemicals to keep the levels correct. It's done for you. Also, most of the pools nowadays are sold with the automatic pool cleaners that vacuum the pool for you. Maintenance is not as bad as it was.
As far as selling the house, we just took it off the market because the market SUCKS right now. We plan on staying here for a while now because of the market and just because we don't want to be in that limbo area of it being for sale. Just from the experience of trying to sell the house the past 2 years, our house was always in the top 2 of people's choices. The other house including a pool. I swear everyone that came over mentioned a pool. The thing is, with the size of my house, it's mostly families with multiple kids that were interested. And most of them seemed like they were interested in a pool. I think this is a byproduct of the economy and not spending money going to the river, lake, etc....and the fact that pools aren't as much upkeep as they used to be. These are just all assumptions that I have made based off the people that came to my house.

TweetImo, I would only put it in if I really wanted it for myself. I wouldnt spend the $ if it was mostly because of resale value, because the new owner could do it..Yeah, I know its easier if its already there, but is the cost worth what you might get for the home later?
Tweeti wish we had a pool!!! being in the woods has its plus and minus;s and a fool here would be too much....and i'm not cutting and clearing these oak and cherry tree's!! i'd do it if it wasnt for that!!!

It would be for us. We all want it. When we go to her boss' house to swim, we stay there for hours and probably get close to wearing out our welcome. I have no doubts in my mind that we would be in the pool 4 or 5 nights a week for sure. I have always been a big water nut and our 9 year old loves swimming too. So the pool would be for our enjoyment...the resale would just be a plus if it were to help.
I think we are going to do it. My dad's construction company digs the holes for a local pool company and he is making us a good deal. And we have other connections to get stuff cheaper as well like the concrete for .50/ft and the electrical isn't much anyway. It will be expensive but much cheaper than what most would get this pool for. So, I am going to try and make this happen.
Thanks for the opinions guys!

TweetWell, we are in the planning stages of in inground pool. We are having trouble deciding on a depth. When I was growing up, I always thought that a pool with a diving board was 10 feet deep. As I call around to the different pool companies, they are telling me that 8.5 feet is usually what they install for a diving pool. Is this pretty standard? I mean, I have some taller friends and was thinking that 8.5ft may not be deep enough, but the pool installers are telling me that it should be fine.
It's only a 200.00 extra cost to get the extra 1.5ft, but then that takes more away from the shallow end of the pool too. If 8.5ft would be plenty for diving with no worries for anyone, I would probably go that route just to keep from taking away any more from the shallow end.
I just wanted to get some of your suggestions...maybe from some of you that have pools.

TweetI think the 8.5 is fine.
Do not forget about the insurance cost in having, not just the pool but, a diving board. It could be pretty expensive at least here on the east coast it is.

That's what someone else told me too but when I call my insurance company, they are saying that my home owner's has built in liability and that is all that is needed. I even told them that we were getting a diving board. I have State Farm.

TweetTo be safe and sure and if you don't have it handy, get a copy of that "built in liability" wording and give it a good read. May want to review your entire policy while your at it.
TweetWell, I just called my insurance company a 3rd time to verify. I have spoken with a different agent every time. They said as long as it has a fence with locking gate around it, we are good....diving board or not. They will just have to come out and take pictures showing the gate and pool once it is done. I will get a copy of the policy when I get a chance.
Also, in the State of TN, there is a new law that any in-ground pools installed have to come with an alarm. Basically like a house alarm. When turned on, when the pool is disturbed to a certain point, the alarm goes off.

TweetAnd my only fear about 8.5ft is this. Say my friend that comes over is 6'5" and wants to dive. That gives him 2ft to play with....with his arms raised, there is the 2 feet. That's what worries me.
