TweetI'm the same way, but I can't stand perc's either so I'm in a catch 22 when something painful happens...
TweetThere are times in life when we need simple pain relief. Oftentimes, Doctors just do NOT understand severe pain. Often they act like youre some kinda junkie looking for a quick fix to your addiction...some Drs will give you 20 vicodin and a good luck salute out the door. The worst part is if you have a high tolerance to pain killers. Thats my problem. I was in so much pain and I was having to double the dose on percocets before they even touched the pain. So, I end up needing more percocet way before I should have, then they act like your some kind of junkie. I went to the ER and some PA told me i was just a junkie looking to score...I finally got a real Dr in the room who I could talk sense to. I filed a complaint with the hospital and asked that this dude be disciplined for insulting me...I only needed the pain pills for about 5 days and I never took another one after that.
One time I had ankle surgery and after about 2 days the doctor says "You have had enough Vicodin, just take some tylenol"
It does suck when you have a high tolerance for that stuff.

TweetWOW! What a DICK!!! I bet the PA eats them like potatoe chips therefore everyone does in his mind.
TweetI was so mad that I called the Hospital administrator and demanded to have a face to face meeting with the Hospitals board of directors. I told them It was a very serious matter and that I didn't want others to be humiliated and treated like a piece of crap like this PA did to me in that ER. He said "Well, we cant do that, but he will have to meet with some major higher ups about his behavior" That asshole should have been fired immediately. The ONLY thing on my mind when I went to that ER was Pain relief. I was so furious that they called security to come and stand outside my hospital room. I was sitting there in pain saying "I demand to talk to the Admistrator of this Hospital NOW!" LOL...
This is a serious problem right now in our country. Some doctors are afraid to prescribe too much, so their patients end up going home to suffer alone. It really sucks. I remember being in the hospital with the worst pain imaginable and having to wait for hours until the next pain med dispensing. The meds were on the doctors schedule and if you start hurting really bad before they are scheduled then you need to do some deep breathing exercises and deal with the pain as best you can. Too bad. Then I tell the nurse, "please call the doctor and tell him my pain is an 11 on a 1-10 scale and Im dying!!!" She walks back in a few minutes later and says "The doctor says you will have to wait until 7 oclock to get your pain meds". Are you effing kidding me? I can remember they had this meditation channel on the TV in the hospital, with ocean waves and musicI would turn that channel on and suffer endlessly through the night trying to do anything to get rid of the pain. One day in the hospital, I was hurting so bad that I crawled out of the bed and got down on the tile floor and curled up in a ball. Had a ***** nurse that night..she walks in and looks down at me "You sure don't have much of a pain tolerance!!!" Some nurses are like angels, other nurses I swear are demonic and hateful and are only there to put in their hours and collect a paycheck. They hated their job and their life and took it out on patients. Oh yes, I kept a written journal of bad nurse behavior and then I met with the head Nurse Administrator in my room and showed her everything I had written. Needless to say, I was the patient from hell for some of these bad nurses.
Then some people end up turning to alcohol which is worse. I had an awesome nurse onetime in the hospital tell me "Nobody has the right to judge a person about how much pain they are in. Pain is WHAT IT IS TO THE PATIENT"..amen to that
Tweet"you're just a junkie trying to score"!!?? man. I really don't know your temperament, but I could imagine blood boiling. I would've had to come back with something at that pissboy.
I'm right with ya on the tolerance level too. We're just damned. Those with very low tolerances are so blessed.
TweetI have to say that with all the chronic pain I have been in, the meds have been a Godsend! I have experienced doctors who definitely look at me differently when I say I take percocets for pain. I tell them that I don't need much to work, but I know they don'yt believe me. That is why I now have a great pain management doctor that truly is there to help people without judging them. I also see a Rheumatologist who has never had an issue about the pain meds.
When I had my partial nephrectomy oever the summer, I had consulted with a doc that said he gives no pain meds after this surgery. Needless, to say, I did not go with this doctor and I am happy I didn't. Two days in the hospital and much pain medicine was need post op even though my tolerance to pain has always been high.
I have had it also with people who judge others over this very issue. They just have no clue!!

TweetGosh and I have a doctor that will prescribe me ANYTHING I need, which is almost scary in itself! I don't handle pain meds well at all and have a whole cabinet full of pain meds that I couldn't use .
But serious, it seems like its one extreme to the next!
