TweetHow long does this take and what all is involved? My wife is interested in this and I didn't really have any idea what it takes. Is it a full time school thing or is it something you can do on the side of having a full time job?

TweetI know what you mean. So, is the computer based ISSA just as credible as the others? Is their a certain order they fall in? Like Masters, bachelors, associates kind of thing?

TweetThe first thing she needs to ask herself is WHY?
WHY DO I WANT TO BECOME A PERSONAL TRAINER?
I know more trainers and had more trainers work for me personally than anyone I know.
This isn't a job you can take lightly and be worth a damn at.
It takes a very particular type of person with a very specific skill set to be FAIR at this job, to be GOOD it takes much more.
And don't even get me started on how lousy the pay is for 99.999% of the trainers out there.
Very, very few actually make any decent money at it. Most people can make more at McDonalds.
And off topic - - daved150 - -I'm still working on that thing we spoke about the other day. I'll keep you posted as I find out more.

TweetYa, you can do it in your own time. When I did mine (IFPA) I think they sent me all of the info (course book and exam) and I had like 6 months to return it all and wait to hear back. Others I worked with took a one day course from ACE and then took the exam. But you can study ahead of time by getting the course book in advance. I just needed the basic pt certification for where I worked, but they have more advanced certifications as well but you prob have to go to the classes. Im in Florida and there are a lot of classes here (Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville etc). Just research it for a while. You will have to do some cont. education also.

TweetIs she currently working in the fitness field? If not, she needs to get some experience first hand, maybe get a job working in the gym part time, the more she's around it, the easier it will be to learn about it and see if its really what she'd like to do. It quite expensive, to get certified and then to keep it current. She'll want to choose one of the top accredited certifying programs. It does make a difference when you go out looking for work.
They do have personal training school programs that are about 8 weeks long I believe, this makes it a bit easier to learn all of what is involved, those weekend courses that try to jam all the info are tough for someone without a back ground in exercise science and what not. There's more to it than some people think. When you start learning about anatomy, kinesiology, physiology, these alot to learn! Do your research!!
If she has a out going motivating people personality, she may do very well at it!
Stay Strong~~!!!

TweetThanks guys...she was just thinking about this idea. She really wants to go back to school to be a nurse I think. That is the direction I am pushing here anyway. I had told her before I posted that it would be harder than she thought...and not as much money as a nurse. I just needed this info to back it up.

TweetNursing is - in my opinion - a much, much better route to take.
If you have any specific questions about the personal training business, whether it's working for a large chain, being and indie or anything for that matter - - please feel free to shoot me a PM or just throw it out here.
I've been doing this a long time and have seen nearly every aspect of this thing we call a personal training business. the good, the bad and the OMG!!!
