Just a curious question I have when does congress say no to extending money for unemployment benfits. How much longer can we keep extending this and keep giving money. This makes it where peole wont go even look for a job. I know people need it just wanted to hear what everyone else has to say

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Congress will consider extending unemployment benefits after it returns in September to help 1.5 million Americans who risk exhausting them, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on Friday.

"Soon after Congress returns to Washington we'll need to address this matter," Reid said. "There is an economic case to be made for extending unemployment benefits."

The unemployment rate eased to 9.4 percent in July from 9.5 percent the prior month, according to Labor Department data released on Friday. It was the first time the U.S. jobless rate has fallen since April 2008.

But the number of long-term unemployed continues to rise as the country struggles with the longest recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s, and many analysts attributed the dip in July to people giving up the job hunt.

Data ranging from home sales to manufacturing have pointed to an economic revival, but the unemployment rate is expected to remain high, which could lead to an anemic recovery. Obama administration officials say they still expect the unemployment rate to reach 10 percent this year.

As of July 25, 6.31 million people were collecting long-term unemployment benefits, according to Labor Department data.

Some 1.5 million of those people could exhaust those benefits by the end of the end of the year, according to the National Employment Law Project.

"We must help those who are suffering as a result of an economic crisis they did not create," Reid said.

Congress has already extended unemployment benefits for up to 79 weeks and Obama administration officials and Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives have said they will work to extend them further.

But that could widen the already yawning budget deficit, which shot up another $300 billion in July to reach a record $1.3 trillion for the first 10 months of fiscal 2009, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

The CBO expects the budget deficit to top $1.8 trillion for the fiscal year which ends September 30, in large measure due to a $787 economic stimulus bill passed by Congress in February.

Polls show rising public unease with the record deficit and Republicans have sharply criticized it.

"Instead of seeking new ways to expand the government, this Congress needs to get back to the basics of deficit reduction," Republican Senator Judd Gregg said in a statement.

Well, being how the government stepped in and helped lock the system up worse, and made everybodies asses pucker up, I'm kinda torn with this. I feel if I've busted my ass and paid well my fair share of taxes that if I lost my job due to what's going on and all the government intervention, that I'm damn sure going to need the benefits until the economy has came around to accomodate me in my area of expertise. All the while looking for a job in my line of work. It's almost comparable to being injured and unable to do your job that is your skilled trade or field of expertise.

Now this is totally different thanb those that flat-out free-load off the system without working. never worked, won't work, and live off the government. Fuk them. I'd take my tax dollars back on a dime. without thinkin a second time.

I'm torn with this also - I'm recently unemployed but I'll be damned if I'm going to sit back and collect longer just because the option is there.

I think it really comes down to the type of person.

Those of us who are willing to work and want more will never be satisfied with the unemployment pay and want to work.

Those that are F'd up freeloaders are going to suck the tit as long as they can.
It really dooesn't change anything except now they can do it longer without having to go back to work for a few days to restart a claim.
But the way I have seen it - is there is only a pool of moeny available to the person IF they have worked in the past year - it all based on the amoount you worked previously
Once that money is used up they are no longer capable of getting more - regardless of time.
If I had to claim for 16 weeks and still had funds in the money pool of what my employers put in then I would be allowed to extend and receive more but once that is gone there is nothing more I can claim.

At least thats what the woman explained to me on Thursday.

BUt this is of course before this is implemented but I feel there will still be some sort of cap on the moeny if you didn't work then there is nothin to claim against.

You had to work at some time in order to be "unemployed" other wise you'd just be a non-working individual not technically unemployed.

This is a double edged sword. Yes in tough economic times, it is good to keep people afloat with unemployment benefits but not good to encourage people to lay back. I am always a less government type person but I would extend benefits right now.

that's the shyt it. You pay more than your fair share into it, but if you need it back for a period of time, they give you shyt. They should supplement your most the last working years average. Or even better for some, average the last 10yrs. Instead they give you a petty fraction of your proven worth.
