TweetAnd although the catalytic converters weren't installed on cars until 1974, the new and improved emission control system was developed in 1971 with the installation of the A.I.R pump.
Tweetthat a catalytic converter was added to the CBR 600RR in 2005?
I thought it was the last one left that could breathe easy from the factory, after an aftermarket slip-on. So they've all had cats for the last couple years.
Why do you think they added catalytic converters to sportbikes?..besides the obvious, "for cleaner exhaust". Because they ran without them for years, when they came with those big ole factory cans you could fit a body in.
I think one reason for the new cat systems is becuase the new stubby side pipes are too loud from the factory.

Tweetand those big ole cans did have what they called a "catalyzer" in them. That must be why they were so quiet. They're quieter than the newer shorty pipes with catalytic converter systems. You can hear the chain over those big old school pipes.
