I hate hearing about this $hit. The military needs to be more pro-active in treating military personnel that have the symptoms of post-traumatic stress.

      https://www.newsday.com/news/local/ny...36,print.story

The March 2003 image became one of the most iconic of the U.S. invasion of Iraq: that of a bespectacled American soldier carrying an Iraqi child to safety. The photograph of Army Pfc. Joseph Dwyer, who was raised in Mount Sinai, was used by news outlets around the world.

After being lionized by many as the human face of the U.S. effort to rebuild a troubled Iraq, Dwyer brought the battlefield home with him, often grappling violently with delusions that he was being hunted by Iraqi killers.

His internal terror got so bad that, in 2005, he shot up his El Paso, Texas, apartment and held police at bay for three hours with a 9-mm handgun, believing Iraqis were trying to get in.

Last month, on June 28, police in Pinehurst, N.C., who responded to Dwyer's home, said the 31-year-old collapsed and died after abusing a computer cleaner aerosol. Dwyer had moved to North Carolina after living in Texas.

Dwyer, who joined the Army two days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and who was assigned to a unit of the 3rd Infantry Division that one officer called "the tip of the tip of the spear" in the first days of the U.S. invasion, had since then battled depression, sleeplessness and other anxieties that military doctors eventually attributed to post-traumatic stress disorder.

The war that made him a hero at 26 haunted him to the last moments of his life.

"He loved the picture, don't get me wrong, but he just couldn't get over the war," his mother, Maureen Dwyer, said by telephone from her home in Sunset Beach, N.C. "He wasn't Joseph anymore. Joseph never came home."

Dwyer's parents said they tried to get help for their son, appealing to Army and Veterans Affairs officials. Although he was treated off and on in VA facilities, he was never able to shake his anxieties.

      It's total BS!

One of my bros was over there and he saw some pretty bad stuff like guys literally getting blown to pieces just a few feet away from him. He said when he got back that they gave him two visits to talk to someone and that's it. If he wanted/needed more then it would go on his personal record as a negative. Since he was up for promotion to Captain, he sucked it up and delt with it. His marriage almost fell apart, his son didn't want to be around him, he is lucky he recovered.

There have been a lot of post war suicides in our city. I realize, we have six military instalations in our town so that's why but some of these people come home and invovle other people. There have been cases of murder suicides, soldiers intentionally driving down the highway the wrong to kill themselves. It's awful the way they treat the soldiers when they get back. You would think the military would have learned their lesson after Vietnam, but no. I asked my bro why he didn't go outside and he said that if he used his insurance it would go on his permanent records and he could not afford to pay out of pocket. I remember eating at Red Robin with our families and a balloon popped and he hit the ground. He told me that he was driving down the road and a jet flew over (which just happens to sound a lot like an rpg) and he froze. Luckily there were no cars in front of him and the road was straight because he said he completely froze and was not able to react for a couple seconds.

The entire mindset about not getting psychaitric help is stupid. It's one thing if you are a Navy SEAL or something like that, but these regular grunts don't have the mentality of those guys so they need help when they get back. Hell, 70 percent of SEAL tryouts fail. There's a reason for that, they don't have the mental toughness to do it. Yet, when they go to war they expect them all to have the same mental toughness, which clearly they do not.
I used to have superhuman powers....until my therapist took them away.

oh thats awful to hear. it is a shame that we are not doing more to help those who were sent over there to endure unreal suffering. There are so many horror stories. There is a massive army base near here and there is constant news about murders, suicides, etc. from iraq war vets....it's like the government is saying "thanks for serving, now go away!"...this is a shameful chapter in our history. something must be done ASAP!!!

****, bro, sounds like we live in the same state..LOL...there are iraq vet sucides and murders all the frickin time around here. Didnt some dude recently jump off the interstate bridge over by carson? People used to like going to the clubs in downtown CS but now they are full of drunk Iraqi vets with ptsd. so now the only people in the clubs are GIs.
I know a chick that works at ft carson and she said you cant believe the shyt those GIs go through that the public never hears about. Especially if you are National Guard. Those soldiers are treated like shyt. No wonder they are pi$$ed. She told me the National Guard are given a choice: Go pay for your own hotel room or sleep in the old prison. That aint no shyt man.

Yes, I heard that when they get back from iraq, they ask them "Do you have any mental problems from the war?"...They know better than to say yes, because that means they may have to stay for a while for testing and evaluation. Most iraq vets say "No, I dont have any head problems from the war" because they just want to go home. This war has phucked up a lot of good lives. God help us all.
