I just had a couple of jehovah's wintesses at the door. They didn't hang around long after I pointed out a couple of variations from the old to new testaments. And I tried to remember the time frame in which the Bible was written as opposed to the time that Jesus actually walked.
Mandarb, when was the Bible actually written? And, what are some fun facts about Jehovah's witness' beliefs?...or do you know much about them?

Hahaha I love debating Jehovahs, I usually invite them in, they get frusterated very quickly and the next time they come they bring "higher ups" in the church, this was how I eventually deabted with a seniour member in their church organization. Well some interesting points for Jehovah Witnesses:

They are a interested in restoring first century Christianity (before the foundation of the Roman catholic church), they don't beleive in the trinity, or Church herarchy (even though they have it in their organization).

They govern everything they beleive by the interpretation of the bible by their governing body, and then that information os memorized by the followers of this church. Go ask any of the the exact same question and they will always respond with the exact same answer! No individual interpretation allowed!

They are known as literalists, meaning that what the bible says is literal, not figurative for the most part, so as an example in Revelations there is a reference to the book of life that has 144,000 names in it (meaning that only that many people will gain eternal life), just so you know the population of Jehovahs worldwide is aproximately 7 million, they don't like it when you point that out! lol These people will be a heavenly governmet for the rest of the people that will be resurrected on Earth.

This group started in the 1870's by a guy name Charles Russel, which they hate it when they are reffered to as Russelites, which was their early name for their group. Russel met up with a guy named Barbour who had predicted the visible return of Christ at 1873, and when that failed to occur, he revised the prediction to 1874. Soon after Barbour's second disappointment, his group decided Christ had returned invisibly to Earth in 1874. lol

Other interesting predictions by Russel and his group. Armagedenon was to occur in 1914 (we are still here).

Christ's 1000 year reign was to begin in 1975 (hey I was born in 1975! lol).

Jesus was God's first creation and is therefore independent of God. They are not one.

There are lots of interesting aspects of this religion, too many to go over.

Now the gospels (the only known writers to ever talk about Jesus) were written at various times.

Mark was written between 65 and 80 CE (commen era) and was used as the basis for Matthew and Luke. The author is anonymous and its big theme is the "messianic secret", which is throughout this work Jesus commands his followers to not reveal that he is the messiah (quite different from the later works).

Matthew again written anonymously, was written around 80-85 CE, written in Antioch. This gospel is most closly aligned to the Jewish traditions therefore it is beleived to have been written by a Jew. What Paul would refer to as the "circumcision faction".

Luke was written (again author unknown) between 80 and 90 CE, this interestingly enough was referenced by a man named Marcion in 144 CE where he never attributed this work to Luke but instead called it the Gospel of the Lord, meaning that up to 144CE this work was not yet attributed to Luke!

John being the latest work, again written anonymously, between 90 and 150 CE! This one scholars regard as the least reliable of the texts as it does not contain any real history and is mostly trying to emphasis the Jesus is the WORD (Logos) and the Christ etc.

      Now onto Canonization.
The first defined list of "authorized" books for the Christian canon was in 367 CE by Athanasius who was the bishop of Alexandria. A full dogmatic list of books was not officially canonized by the Roman Catholic Church though until 1546 at the council of Trent. There are many Christia works that were left out of the canon many more than actually went into it.

Hope this helps, there is literally to much info to give but this should arm you a bit for your next discussion!

I happened to be going out to my truck, so I opened the door and almost ran over the little ole black woman. So I just stepped outside and let the pitch go for a second and as soon as she got to some scripture I started in with some debate. The 350lb round young fellow that was possibly her grandson seemed very surprised and interested at the same time. He said he was going to ask the elders about the facts I threw at them, and he asked if it was okay to come back when he has answers. I said "sure." As long as they catch me in the right mood, I'd enjoy putting more questions in their mind about their religious beliefs.

Thanks for the information mandarb. So basically, I think you have a better chance of winning the lottery than achieving eternal life, lol. I would've loved to had thrown that statement at them. If I would've thought, I already knew about that 144k. Your facts on that religion means that they are basically anything but intellectuals. They would have to lack intellect. Poor bastuds. They don't know any better, and apparently can't learn.

Wow!! That's some good info, Mandarb11. Nice post.

I don't answer the door when they show up at my house. One time I was cutting the grass, and they come up. They kept hanging around the house waiting for me to stop, but I didn't. I had somewhere else to be, so I needed to get finished. I never got off my mower, and they finally left.

A very good friend of mine is Jehovah's witnesses. When I first met her and found out her religion, I was a little nervous because I expected her to hound me about joining her church. She's never once tried too convert me.

Interesting. There is a Jehovah witness building down the road from me and it doesn't have any windows.

One thing about Jehovah witness, they know the Bible and take their religion pretty seriously. I'm surprised they attempted to a debate with you, Mandarb, considering your an atheist. I was under the impression they like for their "targets" to at least hold the premise that the Bible is the word of god. Maybe your in depth knowledge of the Bible caused enough personal doubt for them that they at least had to reassure their own faith by confronting you. Because the two atheists I know that have been confronted by Jehovah witness discounted the Bible as the word of god and were quickly free of any dialog with the JW.

yeah, come to think of it, I've passed a few jehovah's witness joints and they are all dungeonish. Tey look like a funeral home without even any windows up front. I'm sure it's probably some whacky belief.
Another thing. Why would you go around trying to recruit people to your religion to take one of the few places in eternity?

Ya it is interesting. I have always been able to engage different religious people in dialogue, had a great discussion one time with some mormons that were going around to everyones house trying to convert. They were just like the Jehovahs, memorized particular passages but could not really explan such passages. It is like knowing the words to a song but having no idea what the song is about.

Also of note the bible used by Jehovah Witnesses (the New Worl Translation) has certain passages reinterpreted to conform to their beleif system. I literally have every bible written in English so I have been able to compare certain important passages. A good example between the King James version and the New World Translation is in king James's John 1:1 declares Jesus' deity "the Word was God". In the NWT version they write it "the Word was a god".

Also I forgot to mention that they beleive that Jesus was actually the Arch Angel Michael made flesh!

There you go bro some more ammo for you! lol

I do admire their strong beleif though, overall they are not very hypocritical and seem to beleive what they are taught.

A few morei nteresting facts about them, they are not allowed to participate in blood transfusions, celebrating birthdays, or holidays, voting, flag saluting and military service. This is largly why the rest of society is not friendly to them!

Yeah, do you know what belief causes this behavior.

Don't they also view the cross as a symbol of blasphemy?

Oh they have no wondows for a very practical reason, people tend to percecute them. They would be replacing broken windows all the time. I remember quite well how Jehovah Witness' were treated by other "good" Christians. Every Halloween their house was egged and toilet papered, their children were bullied constantly, basically they were treated as subhuman. The ****s actually persecuted them as well a lot were sent to concentration camps and would be released if they recanted their beleifs, most did not.

They quote scripture for their not participating in all these things, they beleive that all power in this world comes from satan so all institutions like the government etc they do not participate in.

They beleive that Jesus was crucified on a stake not a cross, the cross which is a much older pagan symbol they say the devil has tricked people into using to represent the passion.

Why they do not allow blood transfusions:

Genesis 9:4 "But flesh (meat) with...blood...ye shall not eat"
Leviticus 17:12-14 "...No soul of you shall eat blood...whosoever eateth it shall be cut off"
Acts 15:29 "That ye abstain...from blood..."
Acts 21:25 "...Gentiles...keep themselves from things offered to idols and from blood..."

hahaa, so I pissed them off on so many levels. I talked to them alittle about the government and Ron Paul. No wonder they had nothing to add. I mentioned how 90% of Americans celebrate Christmas but we've taken the Christ out of the season so not to offend the few that don't celebrate it. hahaha!...that's great! I even wrapped up by saying, "Happy holidays and as I like to say, Merry Christmas" lol...that is priceless! I ruffled all their feathers by chance. Shooting from the hip and still nailed it.
