It could have also been the fact that at that time there weren't many comparable cars to top the Taurus. It didn't mean that everyone was digging the new look, or the lack of speed. The mid to late 90's was a hideous time for cars. Not many cars were to appealing, especially the sedans! So with slim pickins it was kind of like you take what you can get.
But again I'll hold that the pre 93 Taurus was a badass machine! That SHO I drove was balls asss fast, and it was damn reliable! I even raced a regular pre 93 taurus with my old IROC Z Camaro (only the 5.0 model) and it held on pretty good with me. The after 93 models wouldn't have a chance in hell!
Plus if you ask the general public what they disliked the most about the after 93 models, I am willing to bet any money they will say it looks like a freaking bubble! Just like the contour (the mini taurus) and the 4 door escort. It was like Ford decided Bubbles were the in thing for the 90's!

I wouldn't quite say well built. The 00 and 01 models were recall ridden. I can direct you to a Ford forum where there is horror story after horror story about Focus's! Peoples gas tanks falling off, engine's exploding, engines lighting on fire, Tranny's frying withing 30k miles! They were anything but reliable.
Although my Focus was not reliable, it was one of my favorite cars because it was an absolute blast to drive. It handled like an animal, and with a few general mods was able to go quite quick.
The biggest complaint by all of us Focus fans was the body style change. We all loved the original look of the headlights and taillights. So being that the ZX3 was predominantly a college kid car, Ford took it upon themselves to take a stylish car and turn it into a conservative joke! Then their sales suffer from their stupid change, and they try to somewhat change back, but they still make the change look conservative! It's like they don't pay attention to all of the forums where Ford lovers are bashing their crappy choices in re-designs!
Basically Ford needs to learn if it isn't broke, don't fix it!

Definitely, but now think of how many more of those cars would have sold if it had a $25,000 price tag brand new. Even I would have lined up for one! It's like Chevy and the SSR! They build a cool convertible truck, then make it basically unaffordable for the average american. Then they wonder why their sales suck! It's because they overprice the good stuff, and make the crappy cars affordable.
Well newsflash Ford and Chevy......NOONE WANTS THE CRAPPY CARS, THEY WANT THE COOL CARS! So if you want to not continue to lose share value, how about making cool cars that people can actually afford.
Another perfect example is Dodge and the Neon SRT4. That car was a huge success with the college crowd. So what does Dodge do? THEY REPLACE IT WITH A FREAKING STATION WAGON!!! WHAT WERE THEY THINKING??!! Chrysler corp had there ducks in a row with the new ram, the 300, the SRT4, the magnum and then they start to screw things up with crap like the Caliber and the new upcoming avenger! What a joke those cars are!

You can't quote numbers when it comes to Fords new trucks. Your forgetting there are many guys out there that will buy a Ford truck even if it resembled a giant turd! There is alot of owner loyalty to Ford. I'm telling you, many many guys I know have the new Ford truck and all pick on my Chevy. I laugh because I dust them all day long anytime they try to keep up with me! They all complain that they hate the look of their new Ford and they hate how slow it is!
And sure it is built for towing, but most truck guys are macho types, and macho type guys want their trucks to haul the most stuff, and be the quickest on the road. Don't believe me, pull up to any guy in a truck at a light and hammer the gas. 9 times out of 10 he'll be game for a race. Thus proving that speed matters to them, otherwise they wouldn't be willing to jump in the ring.
But on the flipside they all love the interior, and I hate the interior of my Chevy. Ford's interior is waaaaay nicer! Chevy's interiors are still stuck in the early 90's!

ok bro...your opinion on the looks of the taurus, is just that, opinion. there has always been a sh!t load of 4dr sedans to be baught, and for some reason, people baught (in your opinion) the ugliest one they could...go figure. they baught it for a reason...
the focus...well, there's forums all over the net, about anything and everything. number's are factual...math dont lie!! less recalls, are less recall. am i saying no-one has ever had any problems with a focus? ofcourse not!! i'll also go out on a limb and say, someone, somewhere, has had a problem with a farrari!! does that mean they are junk?? i think not.
i cant quote numbers when it come to the f150??!! thats just silly! bro 946k!!! NINE HUNDRED FORTYSIX THOUSAND trucks!!! please!! why are they so loyal?? why do they continue to subject theirselve's to this pain? bro, if gas wouldnt have jumped, ford would have sold a million units...1 million!!! thats alot of dumb@ss guy's, buying an inferior product, just out of loyalty!!
i stand buy what i say!! math is math, and it is what it is...the rest is opinions! and opinions are like a$$hles, everyone has one.
the t-bird?..it was always supposed to be a limited sales vehicle. if they braught the cost of a ford gt down to 65k, they'd sell a hell of alot more of those also. but, that was never the intention. they sold out of model run, before year end, every year. dont ask me why they wanted to limit it, but it was done buy design. they are a hot ticket used!
Re: if you needed a good used car...
honda civic. thousands of boy racers who trick them out and rag the hell out of them cant be wrong. even with a kid popping the clutch and revving the engine to 8000 rpm they just wont break
they also look nice, insurance is really low and they are great on gas

Daved The Focus had many recalls for the first two years. 00 and 01. I don't know where your getting your info that there were barely any recalls!
Besides just because there isn't recalls doesn't mean there isn't mass problems with a specific car. I guess all the people that had problems with their cars were all lying, and I guess all the people on the forums that are Ford lovers are lying when they say they had problems with there Ford. Makes alot of sense, they bash the company they love for no apparent reason. Or maybe, just maybe they had problems with their beloved Ford and vented online about it.
Like you said numbers are numbers, math doesn't lie. How about I start posting up links to the hordes of people that had nothing but problems with there Fords. Like you said numbers don't lie. For all the numbers of problems Ford did report, there are an equal number of problems they don't report!
And as for you saying they must be loyal for a reason, well it's probably the same type of people that re=elected Bush into office. Not exactly the most logical people.

dude...i already stated the number of recalls on the car since it was introduced!!! and yes, most those recalls were on the 00 and 01. i also never, ever said there was "barely any"...please, dont put words in my mouth. i even stated the number there was in fact. and yes dj...becouse there was no recall, that DOES mean there wasnt a mass problem. when there is a mass problem, they (all manufactures, even one that dont build cars) issue recalls!! and if you want to spend your time posting up links of people who have had prob's with their ford, by all means, be my guest!! i wont be going to all the many, many other forums to pull threads and links about peoples problems with their cars that are not domestic or ford...thats a waste of time! ford or any manufacture, does not have the option of not reporting problems dj. i dont know if you realize this or not. you think that auto manufactures only tell you of the recalls that they want to tell you about? please bro...there's more watch dog groups then you even realize!! no manufacture can hide a major problem...not even ford. there is no conspiracy to hide problems from the public bro!!
it's obvious that we will not agree on this subject. you will never concede the fact that there's been less recalls (witch is the quality indicator in my buisness, weather you like to hear that or not) on the focus and the taurus, than the civic or accord, during the same model years...less recall's dj...less.
that's that...it is what it is...maybe you've been manipulated by the press as i had been in regards to the republican party...do you watch alot of fox tv?

of course if it was up to me I'd say get me a harley and just be done with it ;)
Toyota, Nissans, and Hondas are the best you will find as far as quality goes. It sounds like a lot of people where you live understand that, thus buy them. BMWs are nice too but older ones tend to be very problamtic. Good luck in whatever you purchase.

Well, I'm with Dave, lol
taurus Taurus Taurus
My '96 taurus, candy apple red, with '60's and mags, ie, one step below the sho, was one of my favorite cars of all time, shocked the hell out of me, yet it was
they sell em used for nothing and you can always find em low mileage
You just gotta hunt for em, like most cars, 80% of em look average, yet, if you get right pain and wheels, etc. they look damned good
How soon we all forget, all the imports praised today, were dirt cheap in the '70's with problems, yet, that was the only thing lot's of folks could afford.
As time went on, they improved, and won market share on price, until one day the perception had changed, ( it happens over a generation ), and detroit was in an uphill battle.
It's pretty simple, they don't give out 100k mile warranties because they think they'll fail before then.
Like everything in the last 20 years in life, biz, etc., major changes, major major if your in a certain industry.
Oh, hottest selling cars in china, gm, perception/generation etc.

I never owned a more problematic car than when I had a 2001 Ford Taurus. Perhaps it was a lemon, but I will never buy a ford anything again. I have owned a lot of cars and in my exp foregn ones have been the most reliable.
Re: if you needed a good used car...
well I am now checking out used volvos more and more ever since I found that red one (which has already sold!)...I just simply am not impressed or the least bit interested in anything toyota or honda or nissan...not in the standard coupe or sedan anyway...I can't help it...just being honest...oh and the taurus does nothing for me either...now that's not to say I won't find one of those that someone has put a little work into so that it doesn't look so plain...for some reason dad is just really stuck on a used mercedes for me but I just am not going for it...nothing that he's shown me has impressed me...and I had several friends and coworkers at UNC with used mercedes and guess what, they had problems upon problems with them...but I guess I'm also not too excited about this b/c he keeps saying oh you just need something for another year or two until you can afford something newer...two problems: who's to say I could afford anything in a year or two? and well, you just described the car I have now! hahaha...oy! nothing about this is fun to me...but I'll certainly keep y'all posted and I'll keep reading suggestions...
Re: if you needed a good used car...
my wife bought a piece of shyt honda civic for 500 bucks the thing ran for another 4 years and she put a tons of miles on it. So on a limited budget you cant go wrong with a honda their engines will last a life time imo

hey trip, i see you got the check, lol!! my only point in this whole disscussion was that domestic vehicle's are noway near the junk that some folks seem to imply. it is factual that decades ago, the foriegn manufactur's had edged us out in quality, and pricing. those days are long gone!! as trip pointed out, the hottest selling cars in china are gm. and japanese dealers cannot keep a buick in stock (it's a status symbol over there). so these people, the same one's with better work ethic, higher standards, and better products, seem to perfer american cars....strange.
i wont say that i believe foriegn car's in general are junk...never said that. junk is junk, and a good car, is a good car. always take them to a third party mech. before you purchase. (dont be too shocked trip...millions of people liked their ford, and dont know why...apparently, their called BUSH SUPPORTERS...lol, had to take the shot dj.)

HAHAHA! That manipulated by the press thing was funny! Rep coming your way if I can on that one! You bastard using my own political debating tactics to debate cars with me! HAHAHAHAHAHA!
I'm just saying that companies do whats best for business, not for the consumer. Also some companies take better care of their customers than others. I think your glorifying Ford as if it's some company with a giant halo over it's head. I'll debate with everyone, any day of the week because Ford treated me like crap when I called about issues, there car I owned sucked, and last and most importantly their dealerships for the most part are scamming aholes! (to clarify for the most part means a select few, like your dealership don't fall under the scamming category.)
On top of all that Ford repaired my transmission, then the mechanic forgot to bolt the axle up correctly because he was on his cell phone. So when he took it out for the test drive the axle dropped, and the whole brake assembly dropped into the rim and they slammed into a curb destroying my whole front end. If that wasn't bad enough they never called me about it. Instead they avoided my calls and figured they could fix it before I found out what happened. Luckily I got impatient after it taking a week longer than it was supposed to and walked 10 miles to that dealership to find out the truth. They actually told me that I was not allowed to see my car, and they would ask me to leave if I stepped foot near it. So I ran to it and told them to call the cops if they want. I walked up and my car was in shambles! Needless to say after I reemed the service managers asss, they fixed the car free, and I forced them to pay for performance parts for it, and have it dyno tuned at Steeda for free. Classic Ford for ya!
So again I wouldn't be glorifying Ford with their exceptional cars and service!

glad you thaught that was funny...for a minute there, i thaught, maybe, just maybe, you were gonna get all sensitive on me and sh!t...
bro, i'm not gonna dicount your problems with ford, or the ford dealer. had i been involved, it would've been diff. i know thats easy for me to say here, but if you knew me, costumers do come first...i whole heartidly believe that!!
and the mech. jackin up your ride...while, i'll admit, that regretable, it was human error, not ford's mistake. it was incompedence on the mech. part. why does that equate to the whole company....why does that equate to all dealers...i would expect you to see past that. you ussually try to have a wider view on things, imo. that just seems odd comming from you.
i dont believe ford were's a halo, any more than i believe foriegn manufactures carry a pitch fork. i was try to stick up for ALL domestic made vehicles....ford is just the product, numbers and facts i know best. sure they've mane plenty of mistakes (a$$holes closed us down a week ago bro!!) but, i think people are creatures of habbit, and alot of people have gotten into the habbit of bashing domestic vehicles...just trying to break a couple bad habbits....

and the mech. jackin up your ride...while, i'll admit, that regretable, it was human error, not ford's mistake. it was incompedence on the mech. part. why does that equate to the whole company....why does that equate to all dealers...i would expect you to see past that. you ussually try to have a wider view on things, imo. that just seems odd comming from you.
i dont believe ford were's a halo, any more than i believe foriegn manufactures carry a pitch fork. i was try to stick up for ALL domestic made vehicles....ford is just the product, numbers and facts i know best. sure they've mane plenty of mistakes (a$$holes closed us down a week ago bro!!) but, i think people are creatures of habbit, and alot of people have gotten into the habbit of bashing domestic vehicles...just trying to break a couple bad habbits....
Oh so your mister funny man now using my sensitive comment as well! HAHAHAHA! Beotch!:axe: HAHAHA
On a serious note I blame it on Ford because the dealer tried to cover it up. When I called Ford's corporate office not 1, not 2, but 6 times! They told me that they stand behind their dealers, and it's not their problem! NOT THEIR PROBLEM?! Unbelievable! They were quick to promise the world to get my money, but as soon as they had that they could care less how I was treated!
Chevrolet isn't any better and I'm not even going to get into that one! I've had nothing but problems with all the domestics. That's why I boycott them pretty much now!
Like I said before there are very few select dealers that are good, but they are so few and far between that it's not worth taking the risk of going domestic.
That's just my opinion though and opinions are like aholes! HAHAHA! See how I used your line now? HAHAHAHA! :2guns:
