TweetFord Cutting More Jobs, Extends Losses
(AXcess News) Houston, TX - Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) said it was going to close 2 more plants and cut 10,000 salaried jobs while offering buyouts to 75,000 hourly workers in an attempt to turn around losses and remake itself into a lean, more efficient automaker.
Investors didn't take the job cuts and plant closings lightly, pushing Ford's shares down over 16 percent before managing to recover to a loss of 11 percent in mid-afternoon trading in New York.
Ford said Friday that it would be closing an engine plant Windsor, Ontario, in 2007 and a stamping plant in Maumee, Ohio, in 2008, bringing the total plant closings to 16 from Ford's previous figure of 14 plants.
Ford said it would be accelerating its hourly worker's job cuts, eliminating 30,000 jobs by the end of 2008, four years ahead of schedule.
By accelerating the pace of job cuts Ford will have eliminated almost 30 percent of its entire workforce by 2008. Ford currently employs 130,000 workers in both salaried and hourly jobs.
Ford looks to save $5 billion in costs by offering buyouts to its hourly and salaried workers. The buyouts are being implemented because of the business model, Ford Americas President Mark Fields explained. "The fact is," said Fields, "the business model that served us in North America for decades no longer works."
Fields suggested through his comment that high-priced union wages no longer cut it against foreign automakers like Toyota who was opening plants in the US while GM, Chrysler and Ford were facing cutbacks. But the news is not surprising and Ford's move in offering contract buyouts appears to be modeled after General Motors who offered a similar deal to its hourly workers earlier this year.
Bill Ford Jr. said that the accelerated reorganization plan would bring the automaker back to profitability in 2009. He also said that dividends on its common and Class B stock in the fourth quarter of this year would be suspended.

sorry dave u know i love ya ! lol
If bigger is better then im better than ever !
Tweetyea well, chevy did there "restructuring" last year and canned 30-40k people, not counting the tens of thousand buy-outs. ...then, hired additional help for their mexico operations...something i'm sure ford will have to do as well!

TweetIt's sad that vehicles cost as much as they do but the manufactures can't afford to pay a decent wage to there employees
Tweetwhat do they make now? is it still per hour?
If bigger is better then im better than ever !
Tweetthe ones that are left make good money...i sell to guy's that make anywhere from 18-28 an hr, 1 1/2 for over time, double time for holidays and weekends, plus all the bennies, pensions, med, and so on.
that's what is killing the industry here...the bennies and such. health care for life, pensions after 30 years of service...these guy's start at 18-19 before they hit 50, they got a full ride in pensions...well, they live to be 75-80, thats alot of payout for no productivity. now, i'm not against pensions per sey, but thats what does it....a very, very big chunk of every car sale goes to pensions and bennies, and the foriegn automakers just dont have that bill to pay....yet.

Tweet^ Average health care costs for a family is 6-8k per yr, add say 25yrs after retirement=150-200K not counting pensions. Not only that, the quality is just not up to par with alot of imports and styling. Ppl now are also leasing more instead of buying. I remember the old Cad main plant off Fort. What a plant that was,... then seeing it in the 80's abandon..made me think of all the jobs that were lost. For alot of ppl there it was their home and their life. Ppl just don'twant to take concessions, and i can understand that if the company is making a good profit, but when there are serious probs then they need to do something, but i think Ford is past that point obviously.
TweetI can't believe the stock is down to $8 a share, thats crazy for such a big company.
I'm debating whether to buy some shares maybe just for a long term investment while it's still low.
Tweeti agree with most everything you said, with exception to the quality thing...bro, these "domestic" auto's are built way better than you give credit for. i would agree that in the past (80's to be sure) they (domestics) had more than there share of problems. but that isnt the story anymore. also, your correct, most people are leasing...24mo lease being the most common. 24mo of any, ANY auto, is a pretty safe bet that your not going to see any problems, so i dont get the "reliability" argument that people throw around to begin with. and style..well, thats a matter of taste, and maybe it's the taste of the mojority to perfer the styling of some of the imports, but i havent seen a honda, or toyota that i would take, dollar for dollar, over a fusion, or grand prix, or mustang, charger, or many other domestic's.

Tweetford is getting ready to buy back a bunch of their own share's, if that is any indication of what they expect. and actually just a few weeks ago it hit between 6.50-7.00! for the long haul, i think it's a safe bet. just like chrysler durring the 80's, the u.s. government would never let an icon go down...that's why they bailed out chrysler, and if they had to...ford. i dont personally think it'll come nowhere near that. there's gonna be some more blood shed, but they'll pull through..

TweetHow can you say this Dave?? Honda is way better in quality than grand prix or fusion,( have you looking inside these cars and compare them to Toyota or Honda? and look at the interior quality?, engines, detail on body and paint?) but you are a "Ford" guy, and i have known many, so i know you can't change ones way of thinking, lol! What i mean by quality is the engineering and the components and even the interior material used is of better quality. If you are to ask most ppl that buy imports, they will tell you the reason they are not buying Ford, or GMs is that they are getting better product for a similar price and less depreciation when going to trade it in.
TweetI hate to see that, but the UAW did the same thing that the steel workers did...price themselves right out of a damn job!!! These guys( at least in ohio) are making$30 per hour for unskilled jobs, more for skilled. They get all kinds of ridiculous "breaks" which are paid...i heard 3 15 min a day, plus a half hour paid lunch. Not to count, they get more vacation time/sick days than any other industry...by far....they priced themselves right out of a job...bottom line
Tweetthis is BS. up here ford AND gm are shutting down as well (and have been massively downsizing the last 5-6 years) and at the same time toyota opened up 2 new plants in the last few years (starting salary for the assebly line is like 25/hr, almost twice as high as the ford or gm plants) not fair
