I honestly think your children should love and fear you. If you don't have both you wont have a child who is honest with you. I agree with your point totally. My probablem is I'm only 5'10", I might be 235, but still I'm only 5'10". Well, my wife if 5'10", her sister is 6'1", her mom is 5'10", and her dad is 6'3". I'm guessing I'll be looking up at my son before i know it. So the fear thing needs to be imbedded deep into his head way before that day ever gets here. lol

Sure no one can tell you what to do for the rest of your life, but for damn sure it made me a better person, a person that respects others even if they are not as educated, informed or yes even younger. Prob i see with the younger kids nowdays is alot of them are either "want to be's", or have to have all this designer clothes, nice cars, etc, and don't want to work hard to get somewhere, and biggest thing is they lack character. Why, because mommy and daddy were too afraid to discipline or teach their kids the values that will make them better adults.
That, and the most sad thing, the parents who are soo tied with their careers that they feel love is defined by how much stuff they buy for their kids. Then their kid commits armed robbery to get their attention. You know, the parents who see their kids about 1 hour a day, if that. There is no way to teach values to someone you never see. I make damn sure I spend atleast 3 to 4 hours a day with my family. I might get 2 hours today but then get 6 hours tomorrow and with my job that's usually how it goes.

and i love how now shooting bottle rockets is being compared to using a rifle, glad we are making intelligent points here. and dropping big ass rocks on top of cars is no where near the same either. .
Yeah I'm sorry I'm not as intelligent as you are. Maybe you can explain to me how much of an idiot I am for comparing a bottle rocket (which contains gun powder), to a gun that shoots a bullet (that also contains gun powder). What a moron I must to put that together. How about this if the bottle rocket happened to go into a open window, which is very possible then the person could have gone, blind, deaf, or been disfigured from the explosion, in combination with losing control of their car from the shock and harming and possibly killing other people. But I understand that's to hard of a point for some people to understand. Yeah so it didn't happen, this time but it could happen next time some punk does that.

My point on the big ass rock is that again according to you, kids do stupid things as pranks and it should be no big deal. It's just kids being kids. Well it seriously disfigured a woman for life and her life is now seriously altered for this. I can bet any money that the kids didn't intend for it to hurt someone like that. But guess what it did. And now that woman is screwed for life, and these kids didn't even get a lesson out of this because they ran. They were never found or anything so the woman never got any legal repercussions or any reimbursments for her medical costs and physical / mental anguish she now has to endure. How is that fair these kids don't have to answer for what they did, they aren't disfigured, they don't have horrible credit, and aren't seriously in debt, but this innocent woman that was driving down the thruway has all of that and more. Absolute bullshit, and if these kids were taught to think what if that wouldn't have ever happened.

But again no comparison right? yeah good call.

and EQ there is no difference between child abuse and beating up a kid that "deserves" it. bottom line is he is 12, you don't beat him up for any reason. even with adults, just cause someone deserves an ass beating doesn't mean you should give it to them.
Sure he deserved a nice slap on the mouth and to be tackled to the ground and held till the police pick his ass up. but only if he endangered your life.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
well if you always walk around *****in about whats not fair then i feel bad for you cause ur gonna have a tough time in life. as for guns and bottle rockets well i think ur running out of points so i'll humor u. the difference is quite simple. guns are for killing people and thats it. and the chance of someone getting hurt with a gun is guaranteed. bottle rockets are for entertainment purposes, and when these kids are doing what they did they aren't realizing the danger in what they are doing.
i never said its no big deal when kids do stupid shit, nor did i say it should go unpunished but being an adult and beating up a 12 year old is not the way to handle the situation. if it was ur kid that fucked up can you honestly say yeah i wouldn't care if an adult beat up my kid.

So let me get this straight..

We have members here who think that if I'm driving my car and a kit hits it with a potentially dangerous projectile (bottle rocket, rock, snowball, whatever) that I am not allowed to pull over the vehicle and try to catch the kid that did it? Seriously?

thats not what i'm sayin. my whole argument is based on the fact that the guys beat up the 12 year old they caught. if they didn't do that then that changes everything

That is correct, you do not have the right to "catch" the kid that did it. You only have the right to call the police. Physically restraining someone against their will is assault. Assault against a minor would probably result in worse charges. This is how the laws are set up in the USA (most states).

Law or no law, I don't think it's right. Some kid puts my safety in jeopardy or damages my property, I'm going to do my best to make sure he is caught and punished by the proper authorities (wether it's his parents, or the poilice).

Whatever happened to that "citizens" arrest thing you americans had going?

It really depends on which state you are in. Unfortunately, it is a gamble on whether you should restrain someone until police arrive. Then, you always risk a lawsuit from the person you restrained. This is why I like living in a rural area.

I am with you though GG, I would most likely (depending on the situation) want to hold the person there until the police arrive.

Exactly what I'm saying too! Catching a kid is one thing, chasing a kid into traffic or beating up the kid you caugth is a totally different thing all together. There MUST be sefl control on the part of the adult, there just must.

But how do you catch a kid without chasing him? You cannot control where you chase a kid to/into. I agree that assaulting the kid is not acceptable.

My story to a T! My dad had millions and wouldn't spare a nickel for me. Ever since I was 8 I mowed lawns, raked leaves, and shoveled snow to get money. I had to buy my first car, insurance, gas, and all. I never got any handouts and I thank my dad for it. He would kick my ass if I got out of line, and always made the effort to make sure he knew what I was up to. My parents taught me manners, and consideration which these days you almost never see anymore have it be on the road, in a mall, in a restaurant, or just anywhere public. The majority people these days are self centered, non ambitious, morons. I swear things have drastically changed over the past 20 years. and almost like you mick I started my own construction company and am on my way to being successful. I'm only 25 and have been in business for 2 yrs now. My point is my dad taught me well, which is whom I owe my success too.
