Anyone out there a good guitar player?

I have been working at it for years, but still suck. I want some who is a quality player to steer me in the right direction... maybe send me some exercises to work on.

I just started back up playing. I have been playing off and on for about 7 years. So i am not terrible, but not very good.

I just started lessons from this awesome bluegrass player, I am very hopeful he will improve me.

Saturn, got any more you want to get rid of? I need a new accoustic. Mine has rediculously stiff action and is hard to play. sounds like shit too. I am debating if i should just go buy a cheap one that is easier to play, or hold out till i improve and get a really nice one.

ok, if you were in my shoes... woud you get a decent cheap one just to have something easier to practice on. I have seen an Alvarez acoustic for like 150$ it has nice action and decent sound..... .and a fender solid top acoustic for 200$.

or would you just keep practicing on the shitty guitar and hold out for a nice 500$ + guitar. I am having a hard time deciding.

I am almost leaning toward the cheaper one, since I really have no need for a supre nice one, but would really like something that is easier on the fingers than the one i currently have.

There I a place in my home town (maryland) i am currently in florida...which has Martin guitars for really cheap.

what gage strings do you have on it. A light set of good strings is a good thing to start out with. they are easier to play.

I played lead guitar years ago. I liked the Les Paul. Had a Heritage, the one thats light tan sunburst with the nickel plated hardware. I sold it for $500. , i could kick myself in the ass for doing that. Best thing to do, depending, is listen to alot of guitar riffs and try to study different players. Getting a good teacher is good also, as said above. Find one that is very good at the style your looking to learn, and learn the fundamentals of music theory, if you don't already. Some people are good at reading music while others can learn well by playing by ear. I have an Ovation now, but I looked at the Alvarez acoustics, and they are a very nice sounding guitar. Look in your city paper. They have swap meets sometimes that sell new and used ones that are in like new condition. That where i got mine and i saved 200.

Quality always costs less. So, get the best one you can.

If they have a guitar center in your area go and play a bunch of them.

The other key things, is kind of like in sports, some are good practice players and some are very good game players.

I played and practiced for years and played in bands. Playing with other people will make you so much better so much faster. Practicing you can get mentally lazy, while playing with others to sound even decent you can't.

Your rhythm will improve, your riffs etc.

There's a zillion little things that make a difference.

Like, learn one song completely all the way through, and be able too sing at the same time.

Don't look at the fret board when you play, kind of like trying to dribble a basketball and score, you can't be looking at the ball to get good.

      Good instrument, more enjoyable.

And best of all, a great teacher. A great teacher, can show you quicker than a mediocre teacher, if you don't like one teacher find another quick, don't waste months with a bad teacher, cause bad habits will abound.

      Full Disclosure:

      Cherry Sunburst Fender Tele
63 Les Paul Re-Issue Gold Top
      73 Hot Rodded 100 w Marshall Head, with a peavy 4x10 cabinet

      Ohhhhhh the days.

      Good info guys.

I think i found a good teacher. He was really optimistic and one hell of a player. I only took one lesson, but he already seemed to help.... and if anything he has me excited to be playing again.

There are not a lot of music shops in the area that I have found. so my options are limited for now. I am mainly looking for a good sounding acoustic with easy action. and for an affordable price.

I like to break the Les Paul out once in a while when he's around and hit "Iron Man" just to watch him wince in pain at that coming out of his prize instrument. Then I tell him, come on dad, listen which would you wrather hear and play Johny Cash's version of ghost riders, then slap out Gary Richrath's version, and grin...surprised he didn't make me give it back to him.
I can play the jonny cash one!
