The political decision of invading the Volcano islands and the Philippines

Admiral Ernest J. King of the U.S. Navy was very opposed to Douglas McArthur's reconquest of the Philippines. He said that Formosa should be the next step to invading the Japanese mainland. McArthur was outraged since he knew the Philippines could be held as a strategic island and he also promised the Filipinos he would be back. Admiral King had said that McArthur's ardent desire to liberate the Filipinos was irrelevant to the success of winning the war. In General McArthur's view, the return to the islands should be imperative, not only to redeem the American prestige but also to sever Japanese communications with southeast Asia. He also believed that we could strike Japan directly if we retook the Filipino city of Luzon. Now let us discuss the repurcussions of McArthur's success of retaking the Phillipines over Admiral King's idea of capturing Formosa. We will discuss Admiral King's dislike of invading the Volcano Islanda after we are done discussing one of the most pivotal moments of the war.
