Anyone have any experience potty training a 1 year old dog? We have a 1 year old boxer got her when she was just a pup. I've been trying to get this potty training thing down for a whole year now. Nothing has worked. I know she can hold it because she won't go if we're here. Only when we leave for a period of time. And it's like she knows she's not supposed to go because she puts her head down and acts nervous when we get home and find it.

We've tried putting her in a small sectioned off area and she still goes. Doesn't care if it gets in her bed or not. It's crazy. I'm at a complete loss. Only other thing I can think of is to take her to some type of obedience class, but who knows if that'll help. Our other boxer is perfect. Never goes inside. I just don't get it.

Oh dang. You can buy those pads that you set down that dogs are supposed to pee on.
And praising the heck out of her when she pees outside

Man, I hate potty training. It is time consuming and difficult.

try youtube and stick to one method

Again you must stick to it and spend the time. nothing comes quick unfortunately.

The way I do it is to make notice of when they eat or drink. Then take them outside 45 minutes after and just wait. Give them a small treat when they go.

And if you can catch her in the act of peeing in the house, make a big deal of it. No nbeed to spank the dog, but I tend to start hollering and the dog knows they messed up. Then take her right outside and when she pees outside, praise and reward her

Get those puppy pads for sure. They have some kind of scent that makes a puppy pee on them and not the carpet. Your dog will learn with time. Some dogs take longer. I had a puppy last year that was peeing and crapping in the house until she was over a year old. It was Less and less with time and now she is totally housebroke. Try and catch your dog in the act and immediately grab her and yell NO! and take her outside. Spanking or hitting a dog is NEVER necessary. Not saying you do, just sayin.

Thanks for all the tips everyone. I'm going to keep with it. I can say she's improved a little over the past year, but still no where near potty trained. It's just so frustrating lol. Our other Boxer was very easy to potty train, so I guess I can't complain too much.

Yeah that's pretty much what we do. When we catch her, we just firmly say no and let her know she isn't supposed to do that. She usually won't go when we're home, only when we leave. But, I figure she knows she isn't supposed to because when I get home and say something like "What is this?" and point to it, she puts her head down like she's in trouble. I got some of the super absorbent pads. Being a bigger dog, when she pees it's a lot lol.

I had to crate train my last dog. He would have separation anxiety when we left. It took a while but worked.

I was actually thinking about that and wondering if we should try it. I wasn't sure if it was possibly too late since she's a year old now and has never been crated. I moved a crate into her area a couple months ago, but she wouldn't go anywhere near it. I tired coaxing her over with treats and toys... Nope lol, she was terrified of it. May try again this time with a different strategy.
