I have been working out for a pretty long time(roughly 20 years seriously) and I have heard this statement made ever since I set foot in the gym. The statement I'm talking about is "Just wait till you get older". This statement is made with intent to imply that as you get older that you will no longer look as good as you do now, or you will not be able to work out as hard or as effective as you can when you are young. I view this as an extremely negative statement. I have personally found that as I get older and mature through my years that I get smarter with my workouts and I continue to excel. I have also had injuries that required surgery, but that still has not held me back. It may have slightly detoured my course, but my point here being is fitness is a mindset. If you set limitations for yourself then you will never improve. I just smile when an older fella says, "just wait till your older", because that phrase has driven me to be a better person and fitness fanatic then I would have ever been, so thank you to all you negative Nancies.

I agree with you 100%. Statements like that also make me more driven too. It is great that you use this as a positive. Negativity is a choice. Tell them "you don't get older, just better"

i dont so much take those types of statements as a negative. most of the older end bodybuilders and power lifters that i know did dumb shit coming up and now they are paying for it. more often times than not they see other younger end guys doing almost the exact same things that they did and they are giving the age old wisdom of, "that's probably not a good idea because you are going to pay for it at my age" me on the other hand, i just observe the stupidity shake my head and move on. it has zero impact on me or my training so in all honesty what that retard is doing is all on them.
i also cant say that i practiced what i now preach nor did i listen to the old guys either. i would go straight in and squat dead lift and bench with pretty much no warmup at all other than up sets. so now i am paying for it and my prep work for training is a long ass drawn out process. i am still relatively healthy and can move some weight but in hindsight i should have heeded their warnings and advice and i would probably be much further along than i am now

i see your point of view BUT I can tell you as I close into 50 years old there is no way I can train as hard as I did when I was 25. Nor can I build muscle as well or keep up with the young folk at my camp. I get hurt way easier and it takes me 3X as long to heal.

That said, I recognize my body is slowing down and train as hard as I can without pushing too hard. many folk train like they are still young and end up being hurt all the time. that will cause negativity for sure. Me I am damn pleased with where I am as an older gent still training with the young fellas........and still maintaining their respect. So with age comes maturity like you said my friend. with maturity comes wisdom to realize we do slow down as we age.

BUT we can still kick ass, that is what I have chosen to do.......kick ass to the best of my ability. that is my mindset.

All great points. I have been fortunate enough to be pretty in tune with my body and back off a bit when it feels right. Listening to my body has been key for me. Fitness has been a passion of mine for a really long time and I just try and use whatever I can to prolong my fitness career. I'm not sure at what age I'll stop competing in powerlifting, but as of right now I continue to get stronger and more competitive.

On the upside Fuzo is months from 50 and trains harder and lifts more than ever BUT with modifications and much smarter in his training now. He has had many surgeries and recovers well. Just depends on the person and much negative from people is sometimes envy, imo
