Again I haven't seen it though, just seems that the main character may be justifying suicide because of others around her. Does any of this seem like an accurate first assumption?

Yes, I have felt the same way. I think there is so much out there that puts things in peoples head sometimes. My daughter wants to watch it and I am indifferent about it. While I think it teaches some great things, I agree with the things you feel too. If I decide she can, we will watch it together.
