I actually went to the range and shot both this weekend. (Both Glocks and full size) Now I have an even bigger decision because I loved BOTH of them lol. I felt a little more control with the 9mm, but damn that .40 just felt super comfortable in my hand. They were both a huge difference from my .45. Based on comfort, I'm leaning a bit towards to .40. Wish I had the coin to just get both.

9mm. Lots of rounds and easier to shoot accurately. Reloading stuff is more plentiful IMO, if you reload with the right components you can put together a pretty high power 9mm round together. In fact i blew 2 glock 17s up with a little too much autcomp. That was due to trying to see how much i could get out of my compensator though. Glad i still have all of my fingers.

A well placed shot with a 9mm round ultimately is more effective than a crappy shot with a large caliber round. Although i do like 45acp just not a fan at all of 40

the .40 will get more penetration and has more FPS but case pressure is a lot higher making recoil snappy and hard as opposed to .45 thump and push. I prefer the .45. I can rapid fire my 1911 at a target at 5 yards and put them all in center mass. sold my glock 22 because after 3 shots I was at the top of the ring going up when rapid fire. granted one could fix this but why? I already can shoot the .45 fine without practice. same with 9mm. best of both worlds

Newer glock 9s are built on 40 frames. The two shoukd be virtually identical, the only difference is in the extractor. If you have not purchased yet try to get your hands on a h&k vp series, and the walther PPQ M2. These 2 are much better than any of the polymer framed guns. The triggers are much better, the PPQ has the better trigger of the 2, but both are a huge improvement.

As far as 9 vs 40 the difference in terminal ballistics is nothing. Service caliber rounds (9,40,45) are all virtually identical in there terminal ballistics performance. 40 offers a little more penitration on objects like windshields, even with the added penitration most LE agencies including the FBI are returning to 9mm.

Reloading is fine for training ammo, but you cant get any of the high end hollow points as reloading components unless you buy pulled bullets. You can buy some of the older generation hollow points like the hornady xtp, but you wont find HST, Ranger T, Gold dots, or any of the other hollow points I would trust my life with available for reloading.

Pick whatever you shoot best, and if concealed carry is one of the uses make sure it conceals well. Availability of ammo isn't a concern for the service calibers. 40 will be more expensive than 9, but its only marginal.

Awesome post brotha, thanks for all the info. I haven't purchased yet, so will definitely check out the H&K VP series and the Walther PPQ M2. Went to the range not too long ago and shot the Ruger SR9 and SR40. I was accurate as hell with the SR9 and both felt very comfortable in my hand. Can't wait to check out the Walther and H&K.

I myself chose the 9mm over the 40. In my humble opinion, in the end, shot placement is what really matter most. My 9 has minimal muzzle flip which makes reaquiring the target that much quicker....and with a concealed carry piece, every millisecond count.... and it's also cheaper to shoot. I train with mine every week and put a minimum of 200 rounds through it every time I'm at the range. When you look at the extra $10 bucks per 100 it costs extra for the 40 cal rounds...it just makes sense...but then again, that's just my two cents...best of luck.

I vote the 9mm, quicker target re-aquisition and slightly more mag space...plus with the advances in bullet structure and ballistics make it much better than in the past. Just my two cents:-)

This is an old thread but it's back to life so I'll add my 2 cents. I prefer 9mm over .40 due to the cost of ammo. I usually shoot 150 to 200 rounds out of my 9s when I go to the range, which would cost significantly more with a 40. Another reason I like 9mm is the larger capacity offered in some models. My XDM holds 19+1, and it's still very comfortable and reasonably lightweight. I also have an H&K USP .45, which is another reason I see no need to buy a .40. However, if I didn't own a .45 then I might would opt for a .40 for home defense and/or carry. There's nothing wrong with owning all three of course, but in my case I just don't want to have to buy another caliber of ammo to have on hand.
