I'm not a fan. Slows me down, I lose my pump, I can't train with the intensity I like too, and they get me unfocused. Only good thing is a spot but I can always ask somebody for that.

I dont do well with training partners. Most talk too damn much or they think its a big competition. I can train harder when I am alone

But I do like to train with a girl now and then. Specially if she is wearing some good yoga pants. Oh hell ya, I can concentrate hard

I work out pretty much alone but not necessarily by choice. I do train very intense alone but I have no prob with a good training partner who takes it as seriously as I do. None of my friends really do what I do though, they're all into crossfit and/ or Olympic lifting. Tell you what though nothing better than a good training session with guns. We got good synergy together and kill it every time I think. Great thread.

crossfit it is great working with guys that are pretty close to your level. the competitiveness makes me push harder. I try to keep my form and after a WOD if a guy beat me I ask how his form was, you can tell if a brother cheated. for power lifting it is also real good without a spotter how would you go for the hard lifts?

Couldn't agree more. I don't mind training around others but when it comes to getting a workout done, I find that a partner typically slows things down and the training session becomes a social hour, resulting in zero productivity!

you guys that dont like having training partners are training with the wrong people. you need to find someone that has the same goals as you as a start and if you want to achieve a whole new level of success you find someone that is further in the game than you are. good attributes of a proper training partner is 1-same goals and mindset 2-doesnt complain 3-doesnt quit or give up 4-shows up on freaking time 5- equal to or better than you are 6-goal and focus oriented. now i like to get a session in on my own and i have no problem training solo but let's be honest, you cant reach your level of potential going at it all alone. those days when you feel run down a bit or even those days when you feel super strong, you can have someone in there with you that can help eek out an extra rep or 2 or add another 45 on each side and go for another set. it is also pretty nice to have a second ear and pair of eyes to sanity check what you are doing.

i train with a variety of different people some great and some that make me want to pull my freaking hair out. now with that said, i have trained quite a few times with gusto and if i had someone of his drive and motivation around for every session i would be much further along than i am right now. dont get me wrong, i work damn hard but their is a huge difference in training when you have someone that is online with the same drive as you have. plus he doesnt drag ass quit or complain. my wife doesnt either which is who i train with 99% of the time but she is 150lbs lighter than me and not even close to as strong lol

Depends on my mood if I want a partner or not. Many times I go to the gym for stress relief and want to be alone, but many times I need someone to help me push to my limit - harder to give up early with a workout partner.

The other thing I wanted to throw out about having a good workout partner is the learning factor. I don't care how many years you have been doing this if you think you have nothing to learn in the weight room you're selling yourself short and cheating yourself. When I started working with guns I knew that he was going to teach me an ass load about dieting and obviously competition prep. But even in the first few workouts I did with him I learned quite a few simple things that I've been doing wrong or overlooking for 25 years that have made a huge difference in my training.

Doesn't necessarily have to be a coach with more knowledge. Ive learned from people who may not have been doing things as long as me but like guns said had the same goals and/ or motivation. I've always been open to trying other peoples workouts. In my opinion a workout is what you make of it. If Im doing someone else's line up and I don't feel like Im getting enough I just add intensity techniques or throw in an idea or two to help beef up the workout. But yes finding someone who has some more tools in their tool box is always nice.
