      Where I grew up, everything besides church shoes were called "Tennis Shoes". lol..Oh, and we didnt have flip flops back then, they were called "thongs"...When you went to the swimming pool, you wore thongs to protect your feet from the hot concrete.
      ...I remember the kids from back east would call tennis shoes "Sneakers" and I remember thinking "how weird, what the hell are sneakers?" haha

      My granny, my mom and my wife call them tennis shoes but for some reason myself and my kids call them sneakers.... But my granny , my wife and my mom say britches and I call them pants... Lol

      I've always called them sneakers and I have no idea why. I'm with you on the thongs bit. I grew up calling them thongs, then it changed to shower shoes in the Corps, and now I call them flip-flops

      We have always called them "gym shoes".. Flip flops were always called thongs too. How about "pop", that's what we grew up saying while others said "soda",lol

      Growing up, dress shoes were called church shoes because that was the only time they got worn.
      The worst shoes ever were football cleats. The ground would be hard as a rock and running on cleats was murder on your feet lol
