TweetObamacare did nothing to increase the amount of primary care physicians to take on the new load of those with insurance. It did increase by 10% pay for those of us in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Family Practice and Pediatrics. However, that 10% increase in pay will expire in 2016! Whoopee fucking doo... medical students aren't suddenly going into primary care because of the temporary 10% raise, but I do appreciate the raise for now. Only 2-3% still choose primary care after graduating medical school. These patients will continue to go to the Emergency room for non-emergent care ( the flood doors opened by EMTALA passed by Reagan). 1/6 who visit the emergency room are uninsured. Obamacare will at least reduce that to a lower fraction as some of these uninsured will have insurance now. At Emory University we take 3/5 exchanges offered in the Georgia ( Humana, Alliant and Peachcare). We don't take Blue Cross or Kaiser ( the latter for obvious reasons). We have such a shortage here in Georgia already. I have a 2 year waiting list and I am booked 10 months in advance. It doesn't matter that I personally take the insurances on the exchange ( other than helping out the 40 or so established patients of mine who have enrolled on the exchange) but they are already my patients. The ones who are newly insured and want to see me will have to still take ticket along with everyone else...
