A buddy of mine is a journalist for the Salt Lake Tribune. He is in Iraq traveling with the 1st brigade marines. Here is an email he sent to me and other buddies. Kinda crazy.
"Hi fellas,
Kicking it in the big B! I've decided after much careful deliberation that Iraqi is the ass end of nowhere. This country sucks. I'm not sure it was worth liberating, not even sure the people want to be liberated. Rolled up here with a tank company that was the first to seize a bridge across the Euphrates and the first onto Saddam International Airport. Those tankers are nuts, they love to blow shit up. We came rolling out of the desert at about 40 miles an hour and they were shooting anything that moved. We left a trail of burning Iraqi guns and vehicles in our wake, as well as lots of dead folks. Saw some pretty awful stuff. The main gun round from an M1 tank does a hell of a number on the human body, pretty much just parts of the body are left over. The .50 cal machine gun just takes huge chunks out of the body, its almost like a big shark took lots of bites. Then there was the Iraqi who was basically cut in half with a machine gun but was still alive. The American medics were trying to decide whether to even treat him or not. They said they'd come back and see if he was still alive in an hour. Then there were the bodies that the tanks drove over, live five times, what a mess. Pretty hairy combat, there was one point during a night battle that I wasn't sure I was going to see the light of day. The company was surrounded by Iraqi infantry who were firing from every direction. The tanks were blazing away with every gun they had. One tank got knocked out, then we were taking incoming artillery, the M2 Bradley I was in overturned in a canal and we had to bail out and wait for some tanks to hook up and haul us out. I just tried to make myself as small as possible in a ditch along the side of the road. First time I've been scared in a while. In the morning there were Iraqi bodies lying all over the place. Some within a few feet of the tanks. When we attacked the airport it was another night of close quarter fighting. When the sun came up we realized there were underground bunkers all along the side of the road. One of the tankers dropped a grenade down a hole and eventually 41 Iraqis surrendered, with stacks of AKs, RPGs, if they had wanted to light us up that night they could of. We were stationary for hours. While the soldiers were processing the prisoners I was out taking pictures and mortar rounds started coming in. We heard a clanking sound at our feet, it was a dud that landed within 10 feet of all of us. That was pretty fucking crazy. Everyone just looked at each other with our mouths wide open. Well I'm off today with some of the soldiers to go on a looting binge. One of Saddam's palaces is not too far from here and we're going to check it out. Although the fucking special forces guys have been cleaning some of these places out. I'm hoping to be home on or around the 15th. I can't handle this clean living much longer. I need beer and boobs, in abundant quantities. Hope everyone in Salt Lake is doing well and I'll talk to you guys soon."
