TweetOnly word of advice, don't quit your day job. Been there done that. Had almost no life for 5 years before finally throwing in the towel.
TweetSo I am constantly thinking of different ways to make more money and what not. I have been toying with the idea of opening a business for a few years now, but I've never really got into the specifics of doing it and would it be something I would be willing to take a risk on, etc... I've posted on here a few times about the tshirt business idea because my buddy and I already have the printing equipment for that. This would be an on the side of my full time job kind of business. I can't seem to come up with a great name for it though and while using google, I see thousands of tshirt companies out there. That is still an idea in the works.
But this thread is more about a for real full time business. Any of you owners got any tips on what research I need to do, how do you figure up if it's worth leaving a pretty good paying job to try and make more, what gotchas are out there, is the economy in a position to sustain this business, etc...I plan on picking my step dad's brain about this too because he is a business genius in my opinion, but I want to get as many opinions as possible on this deal. Also, the business would be a conflict of interest to my current job so I can't really get a clientele going before leaving my current position. If I could do that, I would have already gotten this ball rolling..
So let me have it....what you got?

TweetWhat was the type of business if you don't mind me asking? Why did it not work? My business would be phone system installation and maintenance and some networking added in there as well. I just see so much potential for this type of work out there. I do it right now for AT&T and I go in some of these business and see the installation that has been done and it is just ridiculous how bad a job the company did and there is no telling what they charged.

Tweeti want to start my own business some day 2 i cant for the life of me figure out what i have no special sklls or trade
TweetThere's just too much money out there man. I have 1 buddy that makes millions (literally) with his UPS (battery backups) business and I have another friend that makes 250k a year with his landscaping business. And I live in a SMALL town. I personally think it's all in what you are offering and how well you market yourself. If I could get 20 maintenance contracts at 10k per year (which is REALLY cheap in this business), that's 200k a year right there. That doesn't count new installation or equipment sales. That's just a maintenance contract on their current equipment or added in with a new installation. And from what I have seen within the business, lightning strikes are about the worst thing that can happen to you.
