I got one now even knowing. We rescued a Great Dane some years ago. Come to find out, he took to my then 2 year old and 1 year old like they were his. If anybody, I mean anybody came near them he would stand up and put himself between my kids and whoever it was concerning him. But he was something else with my wife. He would follow her all over the house, lay on the ground outside of the shower and wait. Where ever she was, he was. He did the same thing with my wife, but only with male humans. When ever a male came in sight of him he was on alert, ears straight up and he was locked on. Not anything aggressive, but more attentive. He would also put himself between my wife and who ever he was eyeing. Even when I was playing with my kids back then and would make them laugh hysterically or even those scream of joys, he would jump up and out his face right in my face like, "what are you doing?" Ha ha, he was a great dog. Big, obedient, and kind. He let my kids crawl all over him and he didn't care, he tolerated them well, and not once was I ever concerned about my kids safety. I wish he was still with us, but when we rescued him he was already 6 or 7 years old. He was with us till last September when he passed. He was 37" at the shoulders and 170lbs. Just his size alone intimidated a lot of people away, and not once did he have to prove himself. Our old neighbor dog had a Great Dane/Mastiff mix that was big too. He would bark like crazy through the fence and Zeus would get so pissed at him. But when we were out front with Zeus, and Wilson (neighbor's dog) out he would run into their garage. Zeus just sat there in our yard. You can see a picture of him in my profile pic. Miss you buddy!!!

      Ezskankin,

man i feel for you on your loss bro. when you have a family member that passes, it's really hard. it's very sad that great danes have such a short life span because they are so loyal and flat out kick ass estate guardians. i used to date a girl who's family had one and that dog was so intimidating (even to me.. who he considered family) to every contractor, stranger, mailman, fed-ex guy, etc... and who ever knocked on the door. he lived only 8 years!

my kids are the reason i'm thinking of investing in one. they mean the world to me and from what i've read, they are an extremely effective at letting home invader know that it is not ok the eff with your family.

i looked at a doberman from baden k9 in new york about 5 years ago. they were 8500 total for the dog and the training. they were so well trained that they could walk your kids across the street safely. only downside is that when out in your house and if someone opened the door without you annoucing them in and they were a stranger the dog could attack. pretty freaking nuts. firearms trained the whole 9 yards

European bloodlines and European breeding programs are far superior to American when it comes to German Sheps, Malinois and Dobermans.
AKC has no regulations against bad hips. In Europe, you cant register a dog for breeding if the hips are bad. Plus, American breeds are bred more for size than performance and intelligence. Not saying all AKC dogs are bad, just much better breeding in Europe.

Have two Rottweilers, both German lines. Male is almost 6, female almost 2. Female is like my little girls sister, they are inseparable, my male is momma's dog. Both have been to multiple obedience classes and are ultra protective. God help someone trying to get into our house.
