After director John Landis delivered the one-two punch of Animal House andBlues Brothers, he was able to make whatever he wanted and used the freedom tounearth an old werewolf screenplay he’d written in the '70s. It seemed odd that thecomedy specialist would move into horror, until you see the movie, which is perhaps thegreatest horror comedy. What could be a tedious plot is enlivened through somehilarious performances and scenarios, while the werewolf material is played completelystraight and tops every other work of full-moon horror. The jaw-dropping werewolftransformation will never be topped, and the character comedy never ceases to entertain(particularly the scenes between the hero and the ghost of his rotting best friend whobegs for suicide before the wolf takes over). An American Werewolf in Londonhasn’t aged a day in three decades and is ideal Halloweenviewing material for anyone lucky enough to experience it for the first time. Continue Reading
