TweetYou guys know my full time job for past 20 years is inthe field of mental health? I share an office with one psychiatrist, so I get liek an education daily, I get all the pharmacy reps in my office- free pens LOL free dinners to listen to presntations etc- There are many meds that whether they are anti dpressants or antipsychotics- contribute to weight gain- Ive seen literally 100s of people past 20 years gain close to 100 pounds a piece- young girls that were once cute and beautiful gain 90pounds in like 2-4 months- crazy- part of it is because they can make one feel lethargic, part of it is because the illness makes you feel apathetic and not wanting to do anything- then a very factual and real issue is some of these meds litrally make you hungry as a horse and they cant stop eating. Psyche meds are powerful, psychiatry is not an exact science and each individual will need to find a different recipe or cocktail so to speak of pills that help them find releif from symptoms , but will minimal sides. The most successfull medication in the field of psychology is clozapine- no med has made more drastic or profound improvements in people with mental health symptoms, never. Yet when people first begin the titration of the medication- they feel like a truck hit them- they drool uncontrollbly and then like one in one thousand can develop a blood disorder called agrnuocytosis, therefore they need to have blood levels checked every week for six months , then EOW for few years after.Plus no one knows what the long term effect of al these meds are. However I have seen a client I met in 1990 who was so hindered by his mental illness, not able to boil water, butter toast or even wipe his ass. In 1991 he began clozapine- such a profound difference in 1995 he took classes at college, later received his degree in counseling, I actually hired him to work for me when I used to supervise group homes and day programs, now he is a practicing psychologist. Just imagine this though- if he were to suddenly develop a toxicity to clozapine they would have to take him off it and he woudl lose everything- all his functioning everything. Ive seen it happen many many times. However as I write this he is still one of the success stories
