Okay, here's the dealio.. my older sister who's 34, is 5'10", and weighs around 220lbs (yikes I know, but she doesn't look like she weighs that much!!) has a major (once in a lifetime experience) coming up on the 15th of Feb. She wants to lose as much weight as possible, and, as much as I've tried to steer her in a healthier direction, insists that crash dieting is the only way to do it. I'm not too familiar with the best "fast weight loss fads" going around, but she's thinking of doing the Atkins diet. After reading his book (skimming would be more like it) It doesn't sound good at all...

Does anyone have any suggestions as far as to get her the goals that she's looking for, without killing her metabolism (or giving her a heart-attack??)

She rarely goes to the gym (maybe once a week) and is a VERY busy mommy of 4 (all under the age of 10) but tries to walk often. She doesn't think she has the time to add any gym time to her schedule right now.

I dunno. I'm kinda stumped myself. I don't think she can lose more than about 10lbs by the 15th, but then that's doing it the "safe" way.

Hoping you guys can give some input on this one, I will supply all the info that I can. TIA!!

Good Advice, but I'm wondering if thats not quite as drastic as she's looking for tho. I don't think that would amount to much loss in 41 days. She doesn't care about being on a "diet", she just wants to look as good as she possibly can for her occassion.

raw veggies and meat only, you want to lose weight then you stop eating, I am not saying it healthy, I hear people say all the time that you won't lose weight if you starve yourself, B.S., look at the first survivor, those people lost serious weight, I doubt she has much muscle to lose, and she will probably gain most of it back, but that is really the only way to make a significant difference in such short time, survive on minimal calories

I agree with O2, cut portion, and eat lean meats, fish, poultry, green veggies, avoid sugar and sat/trans fats altogether. Brisk walking, because it might be too much on her to moderately jog. If she belongs to a healthclub she might want to try to add the eliptical. At least 35-45 min ed cardio. Also streaching excercises.

Here's the deal, if you don't eat enough calories then your body will go into anti-starvation mode. This means your body will take whatever little food you give it and store it as fat. This process will reduce the nutrients to most of the major organs too. The body is controlled by the brain and the brain will tell the body to prevent itself from starving it must store everything as fat. Then, the body will use that energy to keep the heart and brain going. All other organs will suffer during this period. Regardless of the quality of food eatin, if it's too low in cals it will be stored as fat. It's the same with water, people who drink plenty of water do not hold on to it like people who do not drink enough of water.

If I had to choose a quick fix diet, I'd say Atkins. I know from personal experience that it works. You are talking 6 weeks, right? That won't hurt her at all. Atkins is not a long term diet though. If she goes that route she will be able to get enough fat for energy and protein to keep her nitrogen levels up. Any longer than 6 weeks and I'd say do somethign else. Well, I have other suggestions that I know work but if she's lazy then I wont even bother. They will require hard work and discipline.

This is pretty much verbatim for what I told her... yes on the 6 weeks.. well, 40 days now. I don't think she's lazy, just very busy, so suggest away if you'd like. She's definately motivated to lose as much as she can before the 15th, so my guess is that she'll make all attempts to make the time to do what is needed. Not sure she could do any jogging/running/stairs, as she has bad knees also (family trait...)
