R-ALA and ALA to my knowledge are used for different purposes. R for forcing glucose to the muscles post workout (hense it makes no sense to include it in your shake without the dextrose) and plain ALA for liver protection. If I am off base here then someone shoot me.

ALA contains R-ALA. R-ALA is effective for liver protection.
