Does anyone know of any documented proof that food is really better than shakes? Just curious how your body would know protein from a protein or a carb vs a carb.

are we talking in a general context? they both serve a purpose. food is where you get macro and micro nutrients. protein shakes are for added protein supplementation. i think if we nail it down to a specific time, say post workout a whey shake is better as it has a full amino complement and is easily digested and can be used for muscle repair very quickly. as for a meal i think food is better as the macro and micro nutrients are digested at different rates giving a long slow benefit.

Here's another question. I can't remember the last time I had a shake that didn't have oatmeal in it. Can this trick your body into thinking it has real food apposed to a shake.and it is hard for me to understand how a shake couldn't be better cause like you said it is engineered and designed for muscle repair and growth. I'm not trying to argue or be difficult. Just trying to understand. Lol

whole food has and always will rule the day for both conditioning and gaining. shakes are great to keep you on point when in a pinch or if you dont have an intra concoction. other than that the cornerstone for your nutrition should be whole foods imho

I agree. Just from my own personal experience over the years. I've gone through periods where I've relied more on shakes and other times where my diet was super on point and I relied more on whole foods for my nutrition. When relying on mostly on whole foods, I'd still have a shake here and there to help me get a bit extra that I didn't get in from food. My overall physique and conditioning always seemed better when I was getting the majority of my nutrients from food. Shakes certainly have their place and are a very beneficial supplement, but that's how I utilize them in my diet... as a supplement, not my main source of nutrition.
