      After an intense workout, protein is must, whether it's in the form of a shake or a bar. Well, a new study is confirming that fast food is just as useful as a post-workout food choice as a protein supplement. The International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism published a study in which a grad student and his colleagues had top-notch male athletes complete what seemed to be a pretty asinine experiment.

      The grad student had the athletes fast for four hours and do a 90-minute treadmill workout. Half of the athletes were given the typical post-workout nutrition regime of Gatorade, energy cubes, and protein bars. However, the rest of the athletes were given hasbrowns, hamburgers, fries, and soda -- food items you would steer clear from. Once both groups fully digested their food, they went back to working out by riding a bike for 12.4 miles. A week later, each group completed the workout again -- swapping the post-workout nutrition plan. Blood tests were taken for each week.

      IT WON'T KILL YOU

      The results from this experiment showed that the athletes were able to do their workout just as quickly and efficiently after eating like a pig compared to throwing back energy cubes. As for the blood tests indicated that those who consumed fast food had higher levels of muscle glycogen than those who ate the more nutritious post-workout meal. There also wasn't a difference in insulin, glucose, cholesterol, or triglyceride levels, and the athletes didn't feel sick after packing away a greasy meal.

      So what should we take away from this study? Yes, fast food is not good for you but it's also okay to practice other post-workout nutrition strategies -- just don't overindulge!

      i always enjoyed a whole coconut layer cake as a preworkout haha. all the old timers that ate like the study above all have serious health issues now. i will take my fast food only on sched cheat meals. i would say if you are a very very hard gainer tossing that in there once a day may help you get over the hump with the huge boost of cals

      I do that sometimes for post-workout !!!
      I mean when I get out the gym sometimes I don't want a shake , I rather have a meal . And if I'm feeling it on the ride home , I'll stop and grab fast food . Shit , sometimes I wash it down with a shake so there u go !!!

      i dont see nothing wrong with that at all torres as long as you are a hard gainer and you actually take care of your health. the old guys i know only started doing cardio after they were told they were going to die. one dude is both diabetic and has congestive heart failure. not to kick the horse when he is down but he still drinks and eats nasty shit more often than he should

      also this is for a week. what about 6 months or a year. I bet there are different results and I bet the fast food folk have more BF than when they started.

      I don't think it should be done on a constant , like Guns said , but I mean if it's something that assists a person like me , getting over a Gains plateau , then cool !!!
      But his isn't an invitation for everyone to hit up McDonalds for every meal !!!

      i am going to add to this torres and this is from a coaching standpoint as well as reading and listening to tons of other athletes and coaches from all strength sports. if you are eating your required numbers in clean food(see i say hitting all your numbers) and your scale and gains arent moving then it's time to stoke it up. you can only eat so many chicken breasts steaks and sweet potatoes. so adding that meal a day or 2 meals a week could make all the difference in the world to continuing to progress. where i see this being an issue and i have seen it more times than you can count, is when it's abused. like everything we do it can be a tool in the tool box to get over that hump. i made huge progress this past year by implementing 100% clean eating 6 days a week at a min and then having one large cheat meal. it keeps you sane and the gains moving along
