TweetGood nutrition for diabetics
Ways that you can use good nutrition habits to stay healthy and either prevent diabetes or control the disease.
Diabetes is a life-threatening disease. It causes the prevention of the body's ability to burn glucose, thereby raising the sugar levels. Above-normal sugar levels can cause serious problems such as heart and kidney disease. It can also raise a person's blood pressure and cholesterol level which lead to other serious problems.
Diabetes is mostly a hereditary disease, but there are things that you can do to try and minimize your chances of developing this disease.
1. Visit your doctor regularly.
2. See a dietitian.
3. Check your sugar levels frequently.
4. Remain active (or start!)
Most important, you need to keep your nutrition balanced. Eating healthy and following the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) recommendations will help give you an excellent chance of preventing or controlling the disease.
These guidelines are also beneficial to you:
WIDE RANGE OF FOODS
-By eating a variety of foods, you are sure to consume all the vitamins, minerals and fiber your body requires. You need to also eat a well-balanced meal of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
CHECK YOUR WEIGHT
-When you are overweight, you increase your chances of getting diabetes. If you already have diabetes, being overweight can cause many more problems, including making your diabetes even worse.
WATCH YOUR FAT AND CHOLESTEROL
-Eating a diet that is low in saturated fats helps you to control your weight. It also helps to keep your blood cholesterol levels down.
EAT PLENTY OF VEGETABLES, FRUITS AND GRAINS
-These foods will fill you up and contain important antioxidants that protect against disease. They also contain the necessary vitamins your body needs!
MINIMAL SUGAR, SALT AND SODIUM
-Diabetics can eat some sugar as long as they do it in moderation. Salt should be limited to about one teaspoon a day and you should choose foods that are low in sodium.
