TweetSeptember 12, 2017 had rotator cuff tear surgery. Day after the nerve block wore off surgeon had me start rehab. Only bent at the waist, non-repaired arm bracing body weight on a surface and using body momentum start forward/back, then side to side pendulum swings followed by small circles both directions. 10 reps/set, 3 sets a day. Worked my way up to 50 reps before I was set to start PT at the orthopedic surgery center about three weeks later. They lowered me to 30 reps but 4 sets a day followed by 1/2 hour out of the sling after each session of exercises. Finally out of sling at 4 weeks and 2 days. Stretching the shoulder in rehab has improved and ROM increased each visit. Yesterday they started me on the cane drills. Said I could use a cane or stick, but only sticks I have are a 3’ Jo and a 6’ Bo staff and walking into work with those would raise eyebrows. So I grab the cane in an underhand barbell curl position and with the right (non-injured side) slowly push to the left side to stretch left shoulder out, holding in stretched as far as possible position for 10 seconds. Not too bad. Then bring cane up behind me and grab in a knuckles facing toward me grip and try pulling to the right side to stretch left shoulder holding for 10 seconds. Never had great flexibility in that direction even before tear. Getting left hand to outer edge of left glute. Therapist said goal is to get to middle of lower back. This one sucks. Last is no cane, flat on back, hands together interlocking fingers across abs. With strong arm leading, arm is slowly raised to straight up over body and then brought extended straight back towards head to as far as possible without too much pain and held for a count of ten, then brought back to 90 degrees and slowly brought down to abs. 10 reps ea exercise, 4-5 sets/day.
Pics of immediate post op, bruising and gravity pulling blood down into pec and bicep. Gained 20 pounds in 6 days after surgery.

Tweetstill feels like two different parts of one body. the woman i train at the dojo for conditioning said the day the sling came off, "oh you don't look any different". i said wtf you talking about? Got an NFL lineman arm on the right and an NFL cheerleader arm on the left. the traps look silly out of proportion right now.

Latest stretch added to rehab, was at a little more than 100 degrees on first day added last Tuesday , goal is 180 degrees, straight behind head. This was today. They also added in pulley exercise Thursday, pulling down with right arm/handle to extend left arm straight overhead while seated. Getting ROM back

Tweetstill not in the gym the way i like to be in the gym, still just cardio and rehab on the delt but the ROM is going great. Gotta think at least a little of that is the TB-500. But I'm doing everything they ask in rehab and not even thinking about tossing a weight til they green light it. chomping at the bit tho
Tweetat least you are being smart and not going until they give you the go ahead. i know 3 morons personally that went back at it to soon and their repairs didnt take and had to be re done again. one of the morons actually got a horrific infection and almost died from it. then again he was stupid enough to be in the gym the day after having his tricep completely reatached

TweetAmen, want to do it right and only once. was in the gym sunday morning doing some cardio, abs and then on the mat for my rehab exerises and that was it. FU with surgeon today to evaluate strength/limits on raising arm straight to front to gauge PT results and how far they can push ahead the next few weeks.
Tweethad 7 week surgeon FU yesterday, liked what he saw on the PT's notes about rehab. Levels reached in ROM, etc and 0 appts skipped or cancelled. Set for 6 more weeks of rehab with more stretching/flexibility and another 7 week FU where he will probably turn me loose in the gym to start more progressive strengthening. On the right track
Tweetthat's great news

Tweetonly me.....wtf, repaired shoulder making great progress. i do rehab exercises last night at dojo before teaching, all good. go to bed, feeling good. wake up at 2AM with so much pain in my good shoulder i can't sleep. try to roll over on right side pain worse. i get up and go out to couch, pop up recliner part and sleep sitting up for 3 hours, sorta, every time i move the slightest i'm jolted awake. trying to tough it through work today and maybe go home and pop a soma to relax the muscles/ i seriously don't fucking need a torn tendon on the good side. wtf??? don't have a PT appointment til friday to see if maybe they can get the surgeon to take a look. be nice to still be holding out hope of a successful return to shape for summer and not surgery on the other side once the left side is all rehabbed. ughhhhhhh
Tweetso yesterday right shoulder (non surgical repair shoulder) felt better, still a little twinge but I'm thinking i slept with it under my pillow on my right side weds night and it got all kinds of strained. slept with the upright pillow Thursday night and yesterday at PT it felt significantly better than Thursday morning. Left shoulder therapy went great. two new exercises added yesterday to increase ROM and strengthen the repaired delt. So after the pendulum swings, outward stretch with the cane, inward stretch with the strap and pulleys, wall walking and good arm assisted lying stretch to head i got the standing side rotations with shoulder blade squeeze and standing arms raised as high as possible without pain. feels much looser and natural so in great hopes a few more strengthening exercises and then a release to start up with weights but that may still not be til after surgeon follow up again dec 21st.
