keep the weights as heavy as possible safely. dont get into the i need to do high reps crap mindset because it will cost you muscle in the long run. nothing wrong with pushing heavy weights for high end reps either but if it is to easy and you are just chasing reps the muscle will fall off. kill it man but be safe and you will do awesome.
as for the leg extension machine. i do sissy squats instead of leg extensions most of the time myself. i feel like they hammer the entire quad much more effectively than extensions
