We live in the age of the premium spirit. Grey Goose was in the vanguard, and it wasfollowed by all manner of premium and “super-premium” vodkas, gins andtequilas. The trend has now spread to rum and whisky (Scotch was way ahead of the game), and brands are now continuallytrying to out-premium one another. In this overheated moment, it’s wise to bereminded of the humble beginnings of most liquor. And by humble, we mean cooked up in theback of a barn by some peasants living on a mountainside. Here are ourfavorite original alcohols. Some of them are bottled under the same name they startedwith, and some of them are indeed available in super-premium bottles.
