I was 12 when my dad began taking me to his auto repair shop but I was 14 when I began working on the cars. Doing simple jobs like changing oil, spark plugs, thermostats, and batteries. By the time I was 15 or 16, I was yanking out the automatic transmissions from the cars and putting them back after he repaired them. DAMN, I miss those days. At 16, I started working at a McD's and earning a real paycheck. But I helped my dad at his shop until he closed up shop in 1986. Sadly, he passed away a year later.

That was me too man, working on the farm. There is always work to be done. I would come home from school sometimes and try to take off on my 4 wheeler before getting put to work..lol. There was no sleeping in, and no avoiding work for the most part. We had cattle, goats, sheep, and raised about 5 acres of tobacco. If I wasn't working in the tobacco I was going to get hay and loading it in the barn, or fixing fence, feeding the animals, cleaning up the barn, or bush-hogging the fields. I will say this though, I was paid for working in the tobacco and hay. My grandfather and uncles always treated me the same as any other hired hand. An honest day's pay for an honest day of work is what my grandfather always said. The other work was expected without pay however, but the tobacco kept money in my pocket for loafing.

Probably around 10 or 11. My dad used to build houses and would make me get up every day during the summer and work with him. I had to carry shingles all day. It sucked. He got out of houses and bought a dozer and backhoe later on. So when I was about 15, I got to get up every day in the summer and go shovel dirt while installing sewage systems!

Once I got my license, I got a job at the local grocery store for a break....much easier!!

About 12 delivering papers, and cut grass, shoveled snow, and raked leaves for several years growing up. Also worked tobacco on our farm and did other farm work growing up. And I helped my uncle working his water hauling business. We delivered water to people who had cisterns and weak wells, also filled swimming pools. The tobacco was the worst though, that is something I never intend to do again..lol. I had to plant the seeds, pull the plants, set the plants, hoe the weeds, spud the plants, cut the plants, hang the tobacco, and then strip and bail it and take it to the market.
