Vitamin E in Fortified Breakfast Cereals
Research shows that many Americans do not consume enough Vitamin E in their diets. As a result, manufacturers are now trying to fortify breakfast cereals with vitamin E since cereals are such a common breakfast item for Americans.

Fortified cereals are a major source of vitamin E in the American diet. Studies have shown that those who consume vitamin E fortified cereal obtain more vitamin E than those who consumed vitamin E from capsules.

Vitamin E is optimally absorbed by the body when consumed with a source of fat. Therefore when the encapsulated form was taken with fat free milk in this study, it was not absorbed as well. On the other hand, those who supplemented their diet with the vitamin E fortified cereal, showed better absorption of the vitamin.

Vitamin E fortified cereals are recommended for those who are consuming diets that are low in fat. With the increase in low fat diets, some of those people may not be achieving their total recommended vitamin E intake for the day. It is for these people that vitamin E fortified cereals are recommended.
