A new study has looked into the impact of magnesium on individuals with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome who had not yet developed type 2 diabetes. The study found that most had inadequate magnesium intake. Those with the highest level of magnesium intake reduced their risk for blood sugar and metabolic problems by 71%.
Magnesium is a key nutrient for cardiovascular and metabolic health. It is involved in over 300 enzyme activities of the human body, including those involving blood sugar, blood pressure, and bone health. Lacking magnesium sets the stage for deterioration of efficient metabolic function that builds on itself into more significant health problems.
Many people consume less than 300 mg of magnesium per day. While government guidelines call for 400 mg, it is clear that higher intake, up to 800 mg or more, may be quite helpful. Magnesium is lost in sweat during exercise and used up in higher amounts when a person is under stress.
