  • Lactoferrin Helps Oral Candida

Deteriorating or problematic oral hygiene, including periodontal problems, commonly involve an overgrowth of Candida in the oral cavity. A new study shows that bovine lactorferrin can inhibit a number of different strains of oral Candida.
There are several nutrients that are simply vital for maintaining basic immune function in your mouth. Iodine is one of them and lactoferrin is another. You are supposed to make a certain amount of lactoferrin on an ongoing basis, which is in your saliva. When you don’t make enough then imbalances in the oral cavity occur, leading to a wide variety of dental issues as well as being a general stressor to overall health.
Lactoferrin has long had a reputation as a potent anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. It is in very high concentrations in breast milk, a primary way in which immunity is passed from mother to child. Bovine lactoferrin is one of the most studied immunologic compounds in the world, also offering broad immune protection.
The current study was looking into helping older individuals with compromised immunity, wherein Candida problems can really get out of control. At the same time these individuals are often too frail for toxic antifungal drugs. When Candida germ gangs overgrow in the oral cavity their weed-like structure can spread into the bronchial system and cause aspiration pneumonia. This is an example of an opportunistic infection getting out of control. The researchers were excited by their findings and said that bovine lactoferrin “may be useful in reducing the risk of aspiration pneumonia among elderly people requiring care for whom oral care is difficult.”
Many people are not quite so frail but still have significant oral Candida issues as part of germ imbalance that is causing poor dental health. A white coating on the tongue is typical in this situation, whereas yellowness in the coating indicates a more advanced problem. Supplementation with bovine lactoferrin can help immunity in general as well as having anti-Candida activity in particular.
