  • Fish Oil Reduces Breast Cancer Risk

An analysis of 26 studies regarding breast cancer and fish oil consumption has shown that those who regularly consume fish oil have a 14% reduction in the risk for breast cancer in later life.
The studies involved 883,585 people, and the results held whether researchers looked at fish intake, fish oil dietary supplements, or markers of fish oil intake in the blood. For each 100 mg per day amount of fish oil consumed, there was a 5% increase in breast cancer risk reduction. This is a fairly small amount of fish oil supplementation, easily reachable with a capsule per day of quality DHA or several servings of fatty fish per week.
The primary essential fatty acids of fish oil, DHA and EPA, are known to accumulate in cell membranes. Once in cell membranes they help keep cells healthy. One benefit of having healthier cells is less risk for cancer during aging.
Additionally, when DHA is taken in by a cancer cell it produces highly toxic metabolites that kill the cancer. In comparison, no such toxic metabolites are produced when DHA is metabolized by non-cancerous cells.
The study authors conclude: “Our present study provides solid and robust evidence that marine n-3 PUFA are inversely associated with risk of breast cancer. “
