Resveratrol is best known for activating the longevity gene SIRT1, in turn activating many aspects of healthy metabolism. In the current study animals were subjected to experimental stress so as to induce depression. Resveratrol significantly boosted serotonin and noradrenaline, two important nerve transmitters that prevent depression.
The researchers were able to show specific neurotransmitter improvement in various key regions of the brain as a result of resveratrol. Of particular importance is that it directly inhibited monoamine oxidase-A (MAO-A), a key enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters. By inhibiting MAO-A then various neurotransmitter levels remain higher in the face of stress.
A number of studies have shown that resveratrol protects the brain from inflammation. This study indicates it can be of value in support of a better mood.
