  • DHEA Improves Post-Menopausal Symptoms and Sex Life

Women taking low-dose DHEA (10 mg per day) for 1 year experienced a significant reduction in menopausal symptoms, while improving sexual function and frequency of sexual intercourse.

DHEA is the primary hormone produced by your adrenal glands. It must be made in balance with cortisol for optimal function of your body, especially to combat wear and tear, stress, and inflammation. For example, when cortisol is high and DHEA is low then abdominal weight gain occurs – which is a main reason why so many women gain belly fat for the first time following menopause.

This study used low-dose DHEA, a level that would typically not raise DHEA beyond normal. This is good because too much DHEA for women, doses of 50 mg or higher, could convert to estrogen and increase risk for female cancers or could make too many androgens leading to facial hair growth or acne. To avoid this side effects I always recommend supplementing DHEA with a special metabolite of DHEA called 7-keto DHEA, which does not elevate estrogen levels or have these possible side effects.

I have reported previously that DHEA also helps bone density in post-menopausal women. And DHEA is also reported to be one of a number of nutrients that can help raise brain levels of a key brain rejuvenating compound called BDNF, which has anti-aging and anti-depressant effect s.

It has been known for a long time that the sex hormone systems in both men and women rely on the adrenal glands as their foundation for healthy function. Adrenal decline invariably results in sexual health decline. This study proves the point and shows that a safe dose of DHEA for women can make a very large difference in their quality of life.

Men should also understand that DHEA is equally important to their sexual health and quality of health in general. A recent study in men shows that as testosterone and DHEA levels decline, inflammation levels rise. Such inflammation is the primary risk for any disease of aging, including cardiovascular disease.
