America like Canada was founded on a principle of freedom.

Freedom to do whatever the hell you want so long as it does not effect another individual or that individual's property.

Drug laws, steroid laws, and even seatbelt laws go against that feedom. It's not up to the government to protect people from themselves. The government should only go as far as to protect people from other people.

We allow 18year old girls to have breast implants and any other surgery they wish. But if they smoke a joint they're going to jail? We allow people to scale cliffs without a single piece of safety equipment, yet your breaking the law if you forget to put on your seatbelt. America like Canada is also very hypocritical.

It's hard to know where to draw the line when the goverment wants to protect us from hurting ourselves (seatbelts, in my state now (NY) maybe no ephedra) and limiting our freedom of choice.

In general, most things the goverment tries to regulate will help more people rather than hurt them. I agree some are not fair, and some do limit our freedom of choice, however try to keep in mind the intended purpose is to help, not take away things.

Try to remember, you have the right to vote, it does make a difference.

      I'm Republican too.

You have a good point pudgy.

But with the issue your bringing up is healthcare for people who cannot afford it. Why they cannot afford it is irrelevent. Wether it's plain laziness, drug or alcohol addiction, or even mental problems.

There's more alcoholics than druggies. Why not address the bigger problem?

This is the bottom line Pudgy: The government cannot and should not have the power to force a person to be a productive member of society.

If this is a problem, another solution must be found. Because forceing someone to be a productive member of society is a complete 180 from the beliefs in which these countries were founded on.

i think the government spends (wastes) way to much money on trying to spread propaganda that benifits the politicians own agenda and is not neccesarily the best thing to do for their constituents.

Last I heard that isn't quite the case yet.

I think decriminalization is coming, but it hasn't been decriminalized yet. We don't even know what the fines are going to be.

Heck no, the government makes too much money off the industry. How did Hillary expect to pay for her health care package? Raise taxes on cigarettes/tobacco!
With regards to this statement, I think the government should be allow to tax as much as they want (on any kind of recreational drug, alcohol or cigarettes) and nobody should ***** about it.

I'm an ex-smoker 2 packs for the last 20+ years, and I paid whatever taxes were imposed. I never *****ed about it for the simple reason it was something I choose to do, and it is something which is a luxury (not necessary to live). I quit because I knew it wasn't good for me and it was getting too expensive. I would quit drinking beer and wine if the same were true. They are luxury items not needed for everyday living.

Just for arguments sake, it's probably a toss up whether or not it's more economical to tax a blunt or do you decriminalize it and put out of work all the border guards, cops, lawyers etc? Don't forget - they pay taxes only if they're employed. So far as socially acceptable, I think if the government runs out of one cash cow (tobacco, maybe) you may see them decriminalize marijuana sometime in the future.

To me the obvious thing to do is ban tobacco. So the courts will continue to award big settlements, the government will continue to tax and people will continue to use tobacco until lord knows when. or as you say the cash cow runs out then it's on to something else.

Morgan you have a great view on things and you educate me often, THANKS!
Most of this type of goverment control has been around since the dawn of time-the last good example I could think of in recent history was opium, but the goverment failed to control it properly in trade, so they made it illegal. A lot of things are made "illegal" by how well the goverment can get money out of it-or not.

The goverment does talk out of both sides of its mouth, usually whatever it takes for "four more years".
Count on this-if people want it and are willing to pay for it, the goverment will most likely tax it-or make it a crime.

I'm just don't think it's been decriminalized yet because I expected to see a bunch of people celebrateing and holding smoke events. I'd also expect to see nothing but this on the news for about a week.
