More people are looking for needle-exchanges for steroids than for cocaine and crack. That’s the warning from the city’s Merchant’s Quay drug project – who are reporting a dramatic rise in reports of steroid abuse.
‘Clueless’ young men are turning up at the needle exchange thinking steroids are a fast way to look good and toned – so we sit them down and have a chat about health and what they’re doing to their bodies…… the comments from one project worker at Merchants Quay Ireland – where 15% of those looking for needles for one drug only – are using performance enhancing anabolic steroids.
Reports in today’s Independent claim of those using multiple drugs – men and women – 7% are on steroids – which is more than the 6% using cocaine and 6% using crack.
Project boss Tony Geoghegan, says along with the long-term harmful side effects including organ damage and infertility, users can also experience erectile dysfunction, increased sex drive, mood swings and increased aggression which, he points out, is not helpful on the street.
