my bud had a jug of oil he needed to sterilize...got the .2 Whatman.while filtering into a 50ml jug, the pin slipped out a couple times, he put it back in and kept going...when the first 25cc's was done, he left the filter in the jug and refilled the other 25cc then reattached and began filtering again..pin slipped out again a couple times....so when he finished, he baked at 250 for 20 min. w/ a 22g pin to vent...after 20 min...the plastic from the pin is melted, the pin is still there of course...so he cools it off and theres some baked on plastic residue and a tiny hole where the pin was..so the rubber has a tiny hole in it exposing it to air...
he says fine, as long as it was baked and filtered..i say no way cause the hole in the top...is this normal?

are you saying there is a hole in the rubber stopper too big to seal itself?...if so, he should have put a new stopper on the vial.

i think it will be fine if you put it in a new bottle or new stopper in that one!

why bake it? doesn't do anything. It would need to reach over 800 degrees to kill everything. just get new vials and you should be fine but if you want refilter.

it is NEVER a good idea to bake your gear for the purpose of sterilization. BA and a filter are all you need. i would refilter into a new sterile vial.

Transfer it to a new vial. The filter removes the bacteria, as 0.2um is smaller than bacteria the baking step isn't really necessary.
