Our anniversary and her birthday is coming up and I'm toying with getting her a handgun. What are your suggestions for her first gun and the pros and cons? I let her shoot my .40 a while back and it was a bit much. She didn't feel confident with it.

The .22LR cal. is the way to go for a first gun if she gets comfortable with it and can hit a target, then she could move up to a bigger caliber.Try a revolver for her first gun also and it is still the most goof-proof weapon

Im not sure what kind of. 40 you have but I shot my buddys glock. 40 and the recoil was very minimal and the gun was extremely comfortable. I wouldn't think twice about buying a girl one of those. Also they are all around great guns

I have a Glock also.

I got mine a 5 shot 38 lady smith by s&w its very lite and not too much to handle, i also have the glock 23 witch is a bit much for my girl to fire with any skill. I sent her to a class and she's on the money with it now. Hope this helped one thing i had to press to her is it does no good stuffed down in her purse.
bluegill beat me to it, a 38 revolver is a good starter along with a .22 also. I would suggest a .22 only b/c ammo is so cheap that she could shoot all day for an entire week on $40!
Only two things in life are certain, one day you're gonna wake up and one day you won't, every day in between is up to you.
i have a .22 revolver and it is a blast to shoot. my wife likes shooting it. if you are looking for a fun gun to shoot and protection. the guys have it right. .38 wheel gun is tops

I was thinking either .22 or .38 also. I think either of those will be a good choice. I just wanted to hear other people's thoughts on this as well.

MY WIFE HAS A GLOCK 19 9MM AND LOVES IT....CHEAP TO TARGET SHOOT WITH AND ENOUGH FOR HER TO PROTECT HERSELF WITH ALSO. 15 IN THE CLIP ISNT BAD EITHER - SO IF SHE DOESNT HIT YOU WITH ONE..SHES GOT MORE FOR YA!!!![]()
I was wondering if a 9mm might be too much. I wanted to surprise her with it, so I didn't want to get her to go try them....but that would be best, I guess

I would say .22 but... A

is a great gun and little to no recoil. Great stopping power for its size and light as a feather.

Ruger LCP .38 is a great choice. A friend of mine bought one for his wife and I let my fiancée shoot it and she loved it. It's a hammerless revolver (concealed hammer) so very easy to use. If you want something a with a little larger frame then I would opt for the Springfield XDM 9mm. It's very easy to use and has minimal recoil, plus it has a safety, unlike Glocks. You get 19+1 rounds in this so there's plenty of shots in case the need. I have the standard size one and absolutely love it. It has never jammed on me in close to 1,000 rounds of various ammo.

One I have is a 38 Special..Its imo a good starter gun..Are u sure she would really want one for a birthday though?? Just curious...
She's hard to buy for because she never says anything she wants. It's usually just certain clothes here or there. Is it a no go for a birthday gift?
Our anniversary is in a few days too, I could do it then as well. It was just an idea.
Give me your woman's opinion?

I'm on with everybody else.
You cqan't go wrong with a .22mag revolver, .38spl, and a 9mm is always a good all-around for women as well because of the light recoil of the target ammo. not to mention the cheapest to target shoot other than the .22lr. You can put some very effective HP, (Hornady CD), which aren't +P, yet very effective.
I like my +P/+P+ for SD. Energy & velocity is excellent with these. All around, the 9mm is a great performer. cost, capacity, effectiveness.
Its very hard to tell without knowing her.? Did she like shooting, or was she just trying to learn cause you were trying to teach her? If she really doesnt like it...it would be like forcing it on her..Not saying that she wouldnt..Like I said i dont really know. I would try to hint in some way and see how she responds..I know women like the other things you said above, but i understand your trying to make this special, sooo..Hence the hinting..
She talks about wanting her permit quite a bit and says she likes shooting. I'll drop some hints and see. I know what you mean though. I don't want to force it on her. I want her to enjoy it

Yes, i agree..She would prob like it then, if shes saying that..Great idea..
yep. Smith & Wesson makes a sweet light-weight with titanium cylinder and pink grip w/the no-snag hammer. A friend of mine has it in a .38spl. That things is so damn sweet. It looks like those striker-fired revolvers, but the hammer is actually just ablee to grip with the tip of your thumb. I love that pistol. I don't have $799 worth of love for it though. with my broke ass.
smithfield xd .45 sub compact... beautiful... flawless no kick shooting with a big round... it was a bad ass gun and will be my next one... i could group 6-8 round better then i could with my buddys .40 cal glock... LOVE IT! check it out man
